when hybridizing ... a great way to start.. is to set a goal ... what do you want to make ...

do you want to put an edge on small plants.. or want to grow the next giants ...

then you pick a momma accordingly ...

do you want to add white. or yellow .. again .. whether you want a yellow streaker.. or a white streaker ...

etc... etc ...

it doesnt have to be all that complicated ... it just sets you in a direction ....

and.. small plants .. mature faster.. so you can get on with your goals ...

bravo was always one of my faves ... though i had to dig it up every other year.. and get rid of non streakers ...

and do understand... you get your next great edged plant ... from baby streakers.. which eventually settle out ... so it can take 3 to 5 to 7 years. for that to happen ... and thats why i avoided playing with giants ...

i realize its more than you probably want to think about.... but just have fun ...

ps: yes.. galaxy is a good one.. but if you get a single division.. you get one scape next year ... and it might be 2 to 4 years.. before you get the second division.. and the second scape.. etc .... thats my point also ...

Streakers can be an exercise in frustration. I have several, because I like the way they look, but no seeds so far. Splashed Leather has stayed streaked for years, but no scapes. Gunther's Prize and Savannah Supreme have bloomed but never set seed, are reputed to be sterile. No seeds from Lakeside Mom and Sea Lightning, although they're supposed to be fertile. Galaxy had seed pods once- and a deer ate them. Pinstripe Sister is only 3, no seeds yet, but I did get Prom Queen from an eye that stabilized. Kaleidichrome (spelling?) had an eye that turned into Vuvuzela. The main plant didn't like being divided and is barely hanging on.

Get some if you want, we masochists have to stick together. Failure only makes you stronger, right?

I'd like to try crossing a streaker and Maekawa, just to see what happens. At this point I'd be happy to see O.P. seeds.

breeders choice and christmas tree gala are also good beginner streakers.

One also should consider climate, what bloom period works best in your area. are you in the hot south, early freezes of the north. seed doesn't set well in temps over 90 and conversly it also needs 6-8 weeks to mature.

You could also try talking with other growers and see if they might have some of there own seedlings that perform well. I have a FBG cross that I love. sets pods no matter how hot it gets, sun tolerant, and has remained streaked for 5 years now. Could be an option if you know someone. There are plenty of wonderful streakers out there that arn't registered or don't have a name.

London Fog and Spilt Milk are stable streakers.
