I am posting this question in woodworking as this is mostly related to framing than anything else

I am in the SF bay area, and I have an older basement home that came without a garage. I am planning on adding a 2 car garage, and like everything else, adding a garage is looking like an expensive affair with quotes as much as $100/sq ft all in (including foundation) for a garage. Anyone have thoughts or advice? pros and cons?
