Take out the fertilizer- that was a bad move. The tree is under stress, and JM's don't need fertilizer anyway. This may have sealed it's fate in a bad way.

But I am confused- you use the phrase "mature acer" and then also said "then planted it."

How large is this tree?

Was it truly moved, or were half the roots damaged and you repaired it in place?

Can we see a photo of the tree? While the "root ball fertilizer" (whatever that is.......B1?) was unnecessary, I doubt it was especially harmful. Trees can tolerate quite a lot of root disturbance and removal but JMs are rather sensitive in this regard and you/your apprentice have done it at the worst possible time. I would be far more concerned that you may have opened the tree to invasion by soil pathogens, which can be a BIG issue with stress and root disturbance. And little you can do to avoid or prevent.
