If its growing in NY, it is not a machineel - that is a tropical plant in the Euphorbia family and grows in brakish, swampy, mangrove forests.......not likely something one would find in upstate NY!!

Those look like apples to me.

They're nowhere near ripe so a bite will not be enjoyable yet, even if it is a good variety of apple. The reason they look different to the apples you are familiar with is that they are still very young.
