Carrots for fall

last modified: 9 years ago

I direct sowed several varieties of carrots in early April. Despite having considerable organic matter turned into my loamy soil, I still had mostly deformed, misshapen roots, and many didn't have any sweetness to them, they were tough and almost "woody".

Was it the heat?

So, I want to try a fall crop, and I'm going to try it in a large container, with a homemade potting mix, to see if I can get better shaped, and better tasting, carrots. Is right about now a good time to plant for fall harvest? Our first frost is usually around October 25, but we usually don't have a hard freeze (<26F) until sometime around mid November.
