It's a grass. The genus is Paspalum. There are several species, can't identify them from a photo.

Lawn mower makers/sellers must have brought this horrible weed to "lawns." IDK it's botanical name, referred to as bahiagrass in this area. I share your frustration! When one has done something as unpleasant as mowing, the mowed area should look like the mowing happened, for more than a couple days.

Tiffany, thanks so much! We are struggling to keep up. Heat index is 110 degrees and mowing every few days due has been so dreadful. Hopefully I can find a solution!

It is bahia grass. Half of Florida is covered in that stuff. It is used as low budget sod.

How sad! And to think that all those lawns replaced at some time rich, varied, and beautiful native vegetation!

Between digging & smothering, I'm doing everything I can to get rid of our mowed areas, which have no "real grass," just this hideous bahiagrass, Bermuda, St. Augustine, nutgrass, some kind of Japanese grassy weed... nothing worthy of being mowed, (a hideous chore forced onto every homeowner) & called a lawn.
