View from the Cabin is finished

This is the second version of this quilt that I have made. I like the juxtaposition of a traditional block with a modern setting. I tried a new (for me) method of machine binding. I stitched the binding to the front, turned it to the back, and stitched-in-the-ditch next to the binding on the front, thus catching the back fold. It looks great from the front, but the back was not consistently even. Maybe I'll get better with practice. It still looked fine, and it eliminated the line of stitching on the back that you get using my old method.

While visiting DD2 this week, I went into a lovely little quilt shop. There was a group of women there for Sit and Sew. Nosey me had to see what they were working on. I watched as one woman was working on binding. She had sewn to the front and was glue basting and ironing the fold to the back, covering the stitching line from the front. That way, the fold was even and when she ditch sewed from the front, she was guaranteed to catch the binding.

I think there are members here who use this method and can probably explain it better than I. I might just do this on my next project.

Lois that is a very cool quilt. I especially love the red print background, do you mind saying what line of fabric it is??

Rita, I wish I could answer that question. The piece I have left has no information on it. I seem to recall it was called Ground Tomatoes and it was an African designer or African line or something like that. When I first saw it, I thought it was Asian. Wrong side of the world!

Theresa, that is the method I used. I started glue basting, but that was taking too long. I thought I had the fold even with the sewing line (I did catch all the binding), but the margin was wider or narrower as it went along. Maybe glue basting is necessary. I'l definitely try it again.

Very nice...I need to google the binding method, not sure I get how it worked out so on the front side...could you show close up pics...?

Val, here are shots of the same spot on the front and back of the quilt. The stitching hardly shows in the ditch on the front, but the margin on the back is uneven.

Very pretty, Lois! I like the colors a lot.

I've tried machine sewing binding like that, but I can never catch the binding all the way around. I think I'll keep hand sewing it on the back. I seem to be the only person who actually likes doing it.
