thanks! I'm open to getting a new couch, what shape couch would you have...and where would you put the accent chairs? i did think about putting the tv where the bookshelf is, but then the couch would be so far from the tv if i put it against the far wall...

also what wall would you put the book shelf?

I agree with Arcy - love to be able to look out the windows instead of having them to my back. It seems like the least awkward arrangement would be to switch the sectional with the tv; I might look for a lower console, if you chose to do that. Your sectional seems fine for your room. With the chaise section closer to the wall, you could then have some chairs on the camera end of the room, or maybe one there and one in the corner between the windows (but pulled into the room, not actually IN the corner). However you arrange it, I would put the shelves on the wall where you have the picture, and if you move the couch to the tv wall, I'd add the picture above the couch on that wall. I think the shelves look kind of "stuck" onto that wall where they are, sort of lonesome.

Will you be using the space by the bookshelves as a dining space with a table, or do you have a table elsewhere? If it would work to put the tv where the shelves are, you can float your sectional (meaning it doesn't have to be smack up against the wall or in a corner. That way, it wouldn't be so far from the tv.

I think a floor plan with the dimensions of the room and furniture might help people with arrangement suggestions. What room is to the right of the shelves, the kitchen?

You could also switch functions and put the tv where the shelves are and move the sectional into that area with some chairs and then put a dining table into the other space.

hi! thanks for your suggestion...i have the room of the dimension in the post, which is 19x18...to the right of the shelves is a very large kitchen, so we won't put a table in the living room...i have been contemplating putting the tv under the window or where the current bookshelves are as well....i'm open to getting a new couch..maybe i shouldn't do a sectional?

if i put the tv where the bookshelves are, how far would you float the couch..i just hate for space to go to waste if i float too much...

You could fill in that space with a geometric area rug. Also I've done homes where we will move the sofa forward and place a console behind it with decorative accessories atop it.

I would turn the sectional so the chaise portion of the couch (place the back on the couch on the wall where the blue/gold art piece is) toward the double doors and move it out a from the wall so the chaise is not against the wall. Place the TV as I believe somebody else mentions centered on the wall where the bookcase is located and try the bookcase on the wall where the TV is with the plants on either side. Just move the furniture around in the room to see what works best. I'd try that first as your couch is in curtains at present.

I would also put the tv where the bookshelves are and put the sectional on the opposite wall. Bookshelf to the wall where the tv is currently. If you do that, will there be a glare on the tv from the glass doors? The shades on them look much too heavy. At the very least move that plant away from the curtain. I think your sectional looks comfy and appropriate, and I love your tv stand! You could get a couple of comfy but low (short) swivel chairs to go between the sofa and tv. That way, they could face the sofa or tv depending on what you all are doing. Kind of like Juliet's family room in the show Nashville.

There are any number of things you can do on each side of the bookcase to make it look nice and not cluttered. If you move the furniture and post... Houzzer's can offer help and opinions. Your room is very, "heavy" on the wall where the doors are with the couch, table, doors, curtains and bookcase is all... the room might look more balanced the other way is all.

Do you like it? It looks much better from what I can see; hope you'll try getting better pics. Maybe try taking them with the windows to your back. Open the french doors and stand just outside there.

Thanks all! I like it so much better and never thought of putting curtains on all the windows, but I think I will try it. What light bulbs are the best for south facing room? All my lights are so yellow. Do you like the small ottomans or should I go a bit bigger or remove all together? Once I get some new flooring and paint it will look even better!

Do you use the ottomans for seating or?

The ottomans make me think of a dorm room. I think they can go or at least get tucked into a not so prominent spot.

@mrykbee...i agree, but that space was so big and empty and i felt i needed to put something there, but maybe once i get accent chairs it won't look so empty...

how about moving the couch up further so it gaps the space to your TV? you can walk behind the couch, put a nice console behind the couch and add more decor to it. also i would move the couch away from the windows so it is more centered with the painting on the wall.

@beenie821 we tried to move the couch over to center with painting but then it is off centered from TV and we have the TV console as far as it can go over:(

Quite an improvement, and without carpeting especially I think drapes are a must. The small square ottomans don't look quite right in that room. Once the carpeting is gone you can concentrate on getting a large, fabulous area rug. Your TV console is very nice.

With the new arrangement of the room I'm getting a new sectional couch, which side should I put the chaise on that is attached to the couch...the left or right
