Need advice

You know I struggle with color choices sometimes. I'm copying Sharon's quilt strip quilt.

Should I go with the white or the gray? The white is actually sheets that were donated to me when I made the first quilts for the kids several years ago. I used them for backing and these are the scraps, but I think there is enough. (They came from a camp in Iowa in the 60's that the donor's parents owned. Talk about staying true to the history of quilts and using what you have.)

The pretty gray is from bkay and there is plenty of that.

This actually very white.

    I like the grey.

Both work, I think! Love the strips!!

Grey...colors seem to pop more, but either works.

I prefer white, too, but would hesitate to use it due to its age. Give a good tug on a strip of it to see if it tears easily - if so, it might be dry rotted.

I like both too. But I think I prefer the grey just a tad more :)

I like the grey. It adds a modern touch. (But then my whole house is taupe-grey, so I'm a bit prejudiced.)

I like grey too. I think it has a softer contrast than white.

Thanks everyone. I'll have to put it on hold, just found out DB-I-L is in intensive care in Rochester MN so we're heading there.

we are back from mayo's. thank u everyone. he's doing better. I wasn't home 5 minutes before falling down the back steps onto the concrete...hard. typing 1 handed...waiting to see how the pain progresses before deciding to have x-rays. hoping everything is only bruised. was planning on relaxing and quilting. oh well.

Bev, glad to hear BIL is better, but sorry you fell! I hope nothing is broken. :(

    How are you doing?

x-rays showed nothing broken, but possible rotator cuff tear. suppose to go to orthopedic, but think I'll wait a few days for the swelling to go down. Looks like i have half a tennis ball on my shoulder. so no quilting for a while.

Ouch, Bev! I just had RC repair surgery in February. Still recovering. Mine never swelled; just hurt like the devil.

I like the white more than the gray.

Aw Bev, I've heard about your falling experiences, so sorry. Now I know why you couldn't wave back as we flew by on the highway. Very little time to do anything extra this trip. Take care of yourself.......I prefer the gray but it's your choice.

Oh, dear. I hope it isn't a tear.

Wow. Sure hope it mends easily! Glad he's better and sorry you are hurt.

Donna, I wouldn't have thought about the material being dry rotted. However, it does appear to be OK, though much heavier than the other fabrics.

I decided on the grey and started cutting (don't have to lift my arm up for that). However, I'm wondering if it is 100% cotton. I'm cutting four layers at once and with each cut, I get little slivers of fabric coming off from each layer. Almost as if the material is sliding under the cutter. It doesn't feel like 100% cotton. It is not overly fraying.

Bkay, do you know if it is 100% cotton? Does it matter since it is for the children's home in Africa? I don't anticipate these quilts lasting for years anyway. Not sure whether to keep cutting until I hear from you ladies.

It probably doesn't matter what you use. But if you suspect polyester, I find ironing it can help determine. Polyester has a smell. You can also do a burn test.
