While I like the rug you currently have I feel it is not strong enough to anchor your space against the giant chocolate brown shelving unit. I think dark brown shag would add some texture and depth and help anchor the room. Then add blue accessories, lampshades, throws, pillows.

Why do you want a new rug? The one you have looks great. And I do think a brown one would over-brown the room.

The only things I would do here are adjust the sofas so they meet at the corners and the arms don't overlap, and remove the chair that's in front of the fireplace and pull the other chair forward, onto the rug and flanking the bookshelf with the table on the other side.

The problem with the rug is that "you get what you pay fior" I didn't spend a lot and in real life it shows. The ends curl up, hence the sofas placement. I'm trying to use the weight of the sofa to straighten out the rug. My husband doesn't like it at all.

If your only objection to the current rug is that it curls, get some carpet tape and stick it to the floor, or to a heavy rug pad that will keep it on the floor. It really is a handsome rug and looks great in your space. I'd try to make it work.

In real life this rug doesn't look nearly as nice as it does on pictures. That's how I fell into it. The rugs you posted are nice but maybe too busy?

That last photo shows the problem. I think the Alvarez might be too busy; probably not the Celosia, but then again, it's not wool. Both those rugs are also pretty pricey.

Do you have a Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Pottery Barn, etc. where you can go look at rugs in person? If so, choose some candidates, point me to them on the websites, and I will Photoshop them in your room before you buy.

Or actually any rug store. Get the name and brand of rugs you think might work. I can google their images and Photoshop them in your room. Bring me a list of rugs you'd like to see, and I will do it.

Eikvir, a couple of caveats to my renderings: I have to estimate size, so this latest rug may have the medallion in the wrong spot. Be sure to measure and determine where any center medallion will fall. Second, I also have to estimate the level of light in the room, so any rug may appear darker or lighter than what I show.

This latest rug doesn't play well with your abstract art, IMO. I think you should look for something a tad more contemporary.
