What is your budget? And what style chairs? Will you be mixing styles for a more eclectic look? Maybe a mid century style?

A larger rug should be purchase number one. Next come the window treatments, picking up colours from the new rug. Once you have the colours (which may include chair upholstery), then you're ready to decide the sort of chandelier that's appropriate.

One of the most important qualities your chandelier should have is the proper proportions in relationship to your room and to your table. And I don't think the choice of chandelier should be something done as an after thought once everything else is already done since its one of the most visible things in the room.

A truly great chandelier makes a an eye catching design statement, is in good proportions to the space, and gives off plenty of light. It usually sits about 30 inches over the table.

I would find a fabulous chandelier you can't live without and believe me your room will fall into place....any budget? It will help with our suggestions..and what is the size of the room and are you keeping table as a oval or round?

Since you need a new rug anyway, how about going full-on art deco?

Thanks for the advice! The dimensions of room are in this pic. I like to spend no more than 1,500 on the chandelier. I like the table that the old home owners left behind and an oval definitely works best. The room has amazing moldings huge windows with great river views so I don't want drapes. The home was built in 1907 and while I'm open to mixing styles I do want something that honors it's age and history. Thanks!

Something with a empire shape would work beautiful in your space and would of been a style of chandelier used in a formal dining room in the 1907.

Sorry, but IMO that mirror, though nice, is so very wrong for this room. Too ornate.

I also like the art deco chandelier you have now and suggest to get an art deco style mirror instead of the one you have presently.

There doesn't seem to be any Art Deco details to the home, so the existing chandelier, scaled too small for the room, gets rather lost in the volume of the room. The chandelier for this room should be at least 30" in diameter.

The fixture design doesn't work with your gilt mirror at all & the fireplace, faced in brick, is a bit plain to work with either the fixture or the mirror.

Beverly is actually right: the chandelier is too small--though it would probably work with a smaller table--and the house is more craftsman than art deco. Still, it is a very cool chandelier, so if you don't want to design around it, it could possibly fetch a handsome price and be replaced by something larger and more appropriate.

I also agree that the mirror is wrong, too ornate and too dark.

Thanks, grover........yep the light fixture is quite nice but the room has the appearance of comfortable blue jeans that the fixture is like adding a feathered hat to the ensemble. Both great but don't work together.

For a budget of $1500, you should be able to purchase the mirror, a new chandelier & a rug if you are a wise and careful shopper.

From the look in your photos, this room has enough going for it that it doesn't need to be over decorated. A large, but not overly ornate chandelier, a much larger rug (so no chair sits half on half off the rug when pulled out), and a smaller, simpler mirror, will make a balanced ensemble. Some pieces should be prominent, while others are understated, so not everything competes with one another.

I also like your chandelier-- but its definitely too small for the dining room. Is there another place in your house it might work? Maybe in a living room or foyer?
