Hosta ID Help

I labelled this one as 'Guardian Angel' by mistake. Can you please help me correct the ID? Thanks.

    Tyler's treasure?

This name is not registered in my plant database (I entered the name of each when I acquired plants.) So it is unlikely.

Whatever it is, it's sporting yellow on you! Is there any chance First Frost is on your missing list?

Unfortunately, First Frost' is not in the list.

Do you have a list of hostas that are unaccounted for?

    garcanad thanked lindalana 5b Chicago

So many hostas look alike. If we could see your list it would be EXTREMELY helpful to make a better guess. Got any info as to when you acquired it, as that would rule out newer introductions. Did you get it from a Big Box, nursery. or a specific hosta seller, or a neighbor?

Could it be 'Satisfaction' possibly reverting back to 'Piedmont Gold'??? Does that ring any bells?

The problem is of the more than about 170 or so Hosta in the database, except for some obvious ones and the more recently acquired ones, I am still not able to go around and check the current status of the individual Hosta; their current status as entered in the database (Normal, Dead, Lost in the Garden, Specimen etc.) are mostly obsolete. I am trying to retrace and update their statuses in the last couple of years a few at a time. The entry for 'Guardian Angel' indicated that it was acquired in 2010 from a grower on my way to the cottage, and I have just noticed there is another Hosta with no tag that is more likely 'Guardian Angel'. Most of my mature Hosta are acquired before 2013 and few if any are new or recent introductions.

''Satisfaction' is not in the list.

    Do you have Frances Williams?

    garcanad thanked lindalana 5b Chicago

Well, guessing from a list of 170 is much easier than guessing from a database of over 6,000. I don't know of a way to limit the selections to those not available until after 2013. Can you squish down the possibilities in any way?

'Frances Williams' is in the list marked as 'Lost in the Garden'. I checked google image and it does look very similar. However, judging by the plant ID number in the database, it was one of my earliest Hosta acquisitions many years ago. I would expect it to be much bigger.

I did try to go through the database and try to narrow down to a few with Google image help, but I gave up half way and made this post for help. I tried again last night. It appears that the only other likely candidate may be 'Great Arrival' which was purchased at about the same time as my 'Guardian Angel' and from the same source.

Any chance it is Jewel of the Nile?

Wow, ConnieMae- Your Jewel of the Nile is a dead ringer for the OP's photo. And it could be reverting to Dee's Golden Jewel. Don't you just love this forum???

Jewel of the Nile is a good guess, very unstable, and it has that unusual blue-green hue. Mine is reverting to Dee's Golden Jewel very rapidly. Here, in a 2014 photo, it's on the right.

Manyhostas I remove the all gold eyes to maintain the variegation.

Babka - Yes,I do love the forum! Let's see if JOTN is in the database.

lindalana, I have a mature Northern Exposure. Its structural form is different from this one; more horizontal and somewhat bigger leaves.

ConnieMay, it does look very similar. Unfortunately, it is not listed in my database. (It is also possible that the Hosta was mislabelled at source, and the name in the database is incorrect anyway.)

I was hoping that all of you will support 'Great Arrival' as the ID.

Great Arrival's edge turns creamy white by mid-summer (per Hosta library)...

Well, what the heck is in your data base?? Wishing and hoping doesn't work. We could guess until the cows come home, but this is getting silly. GIVE US SOMETHING to pick from PLEASE! We really want to help you but unless you co-operate I give up!

I really appreciate everyone's help here. I understand how frustrating it is to identify a Hosta from picture with little other clues, and hate to waste too much of my kind helpers' time. Perhaps, we just call it quit here. I will temporarily put a tag 'Great Arrival' on it with a note in the database and can be changed easily if I came across better clues. Thanks again to everyone.

Babka, I really did look through for more potential names but can't see anything plausible other than 'Frances Williams' and 'Great Arrival'. I generated a pdf file of my Hosta in the database and attached HERE in case you are curious to look. It is a crude database output. The status column; D-Dead, L- Lost in the Garden, N- Normal etc. The statuses are mostly obsolete especially the 'Normal'.

That really helps alot! You have a very nice collection. I don't understand your coding, but the list of names is what I was after. Good! You wanted to name it
"Guardian Angel" but we know that isn't right, how about "Earth Angel"? Some of the photos in the HL show it as blue as yours.

My guess is for Great Arrival.... But on second thought, yes, it could be Earth Angel, too.

Reason for my leaning toward Great Arrival is because I saw some photos online with corrugation... the photo posted above there are a few leaves that kind of shows a bit of corrugation/puckering.

Description for Great Arrival says it starts out Blue-Green and colors to Dark Green while gold turns creamy white. Long 30 inch scapes with almost White flowers. Have you noticed a color change to dark green? http://www.hostalibrary.org/g/greatarrival.html

Earth Angel has longer flower scapes and light lavender flowers (but in a photo they looked white to me). http://www.hostalibrary.org/e/earthangel.html

My 'Earth Angel' is accounted for and the status is marked as 'Specimen Condition' (even after I divided half for my daughter last year). Its leaves are larger and its structure more imposing. It is one of my favourites.

Are your Robert Frost and Climax accounted for? If it might have been mislabeled from the start, could it be American Halo, or Satisfaction as Babka suggested?

garcanad thanked Kindness Matters (NE Ohio 6a)

Yeah, both 'Robert Frost' and 'Climax' are in very good condition. Indeed, it is always possible the label from supplier is incorrect. 'American Halo' looks plausible. 'Satisfaction' appears to have a wider margin (based on Google images). Like many conifers, I doubt that this form of Hosta can be concretely identified even if I bring a leaf to compare in a Hosta nursery field. Based on my reading, 'Great Arrival' is a reversed sport of 'Great Expectation'. The leaf size is typical 13" long and 10" wide. Unfortunately, I don't have a 'Great Expection' to compare for leaf size and structural form.

Do you have any photo records of this part of the yard that could tell you how long you've had this plant? I noticed that you do have planting dates in your records. Keep in mind that if this plant isn't mature yet, it may not yet look like the online pics you try to compare it to, nor be of mature leaf and clump size. Some of its leaves definitely look bigger, fuller, and more corrugated than others.

Also, just looked at your database again, and the dates for your Great Arrival and Guardian Angel are 3 years apart. Since you clearly mislabeled this one as Guardian Angel, does that mean that you've only had this plant since last year? Or have you had it for about 4 years already, in which case it would more closely match Great Arrival's planting date?

I'm confused because you previously said that your records show you as having acquired Guardian Angel in 2010, which would be a mature plant by now, but 2010 is inconsistent with the dates for either of the aforementioned plants per the datasheet you shared with us (which say 2013 and 2016). I can see how you could have confused those two particular plants since their initials are both GA, but one is a light-margined hosta whereas the other is light-centered that can appear solid-colored, and per datasheet you may not have purchased them in the same year either.

garcanad thanked Kindness Matters (NE Ohio 6a)

The date in that database output is not the planting date. It is the date when I last updated the status of each plant. This is just a simplified print out and does not include other fields such as the log of each plant where the acquisition date is recorded. I did look through my picture records, and this Hosta was planted in 2010 which is the same date I purchased my 'Guardian Angel' and 'Great Arrival' from the same source. It is likely that, I tagged this one as 'Guardian Angel' by mistake. The tag for the actual 'Guardian Angel' was lost in garden cleanup. Both plants are about the same size now.

Gotcha. In that case, I too would go with Great Arrival for this one. I don't have a GA to be able to "confirm" or say with more confidence that it is GA from your pic, but it would make sense to me that it is. Its colors (both blue and yellow) are beautiful, whatever it is!

    Hey, "GA" works for both!
