kitchen design - need to order cabinets yesterday. ;)

Hi! I need a little help! We are putting in a new kitchen!

1. Is there a typical placement for a built-in wastebasket? In our current plan it is to the left of the dishwasher, but I was thinking it would be more convenient to the right of the sink since I'm right-handed?

2. I haven't decided where to put the microwave. The double oven is going over in the corner next to the 30" slide out pantry, and hubby says it can't go in the same cabinet (even though I've seen plenty of pictures where this has been done). I was thinking maybe just the right of it and then have the upper cabinets come all the way down to the countertop (see my drawing), OR, there is a pantry with bifold doors next to the refrigerator--I was thinking of knocking that wall out and adding a countertop there with upper cabinets (which would be an additional 38" to play with on that wall). We could incorporate the microwave either on the left or the right of the refrigerator.

3. In the old kitchen there was a little desk area at the end on the far wall of cabinets that the ovens are on which was only 20 inches deep and allowed a little more room for the walkway. I was thinking of just putting a 24" cabinet with drawers there instead--what is the minimum space I should allow for a walkway?

4. Would anyone keep the soffit--originally I thought it was kind of a cool architectural feature, but now I'm thinking knock it out (the ceilings are 12ft), and then do staggering heights of cabinets on the long cabinet wall.

Talk to me, peeps! You all are amazing and so helpful! ;)

Yes, change the entire footprint! Don't do that weird diagonal island, do a huge singe island with seating, this island can even house a base level microwave, layout needs work. Move the fridge to the other wall, other end. Don't think cabinets now, think layout and ergonomics.

So the reason we kept the diagonal bar area is because it matches the angles of the windows right there where a little nook kitchen table will go overlooking the pool.

It's outdated and closes off an open space. Get rid of it. Trust and old gal cabinet designer. The window is absolutely gorgeous and the island is pedestrian.

Do you have a pic of a nice large island? I'm totally open to changing it! Thanks for your help!!

I have one in my mind:) Honestly this space deserves so much more and a few days won't kill hubby and his deadlines. You have a potential for a totally upscale look here (upscale look doesn't equal expensive in a monetary sense). If you had die hard measurements (not the 2020 plan view you posted), but measurements of the entire space with all the window and door locations (like architectural plan) or just your own measurements, I can lay it out. Hurry, my attention span is super short ;)

    Hello Marja,

I believe with some additions and alterations, you could build a beautiful kitchen in your space. What I would suggest is working with an architect on this project. If you can't afford an architect, I'd suggest to work with a kitchen company that works with an architect and provide you with consultancy.

If you are located in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut we can help you with this. Please take a look at our kitchen models at www.altokitchens.com and see if you like any of our models. If yes, we'll provide you with free on-site consultancy and 3D layout and help you find the ideal solution.

I like the diagonal island... adds character instead of all the same rectangle ones. But, not a big fan of the soffit.

We have a similar kitchen layout with a two level diagonal island. It's great for parties. We use the small rectangular island behind it to serve drinks and place the buffet line for food on the lower level of the island. The three bar stools lining the upper level are good for overflow seating during parties. This way the people getting food and drinks aren't in the way of people eating and socializing.

It also works well when multiple people are working in the kitchen. My mother-in-law lives with us half the year and cooks separate meals for herself (she's a traditional Indian vegetarian and we're confirmed carnivores) and we usually don't get in each other's way when we are cooking separate meals at the same time.

As for the trashcan pull out I think it needs to be out of the way at the end of a bank of cabinets. That way people who need to throw trash away aren't in the way of the people working in the kitchen. Our's is at the opposite end of the diagonal island from the dishwasher and that location works quite well. I just wish I had a pull out for recycling and next to it an old school trash compactor. We put a tall laundry basket in the pull out for recycling. There's just enough room next to it to store our box of trash bags.
