I do that, too, Rita! I start with big meandering or large loops, and they get smaller and smaller. I wonder why we do that? :)

I've always done a loose design, except for the Lotto winning wallhanging that has been on my sewing table forever. I am doing stippling and find I can only do one sq at a time because I get so bored and start making errors. Then I wait forever before picking it up again. I like to be able to finish the quilting in just a couple of days.

I actually do go back and forth between free motion and the walking foot, it depends on my mood. I get bored really easy with the quilting phase. I actually enjoy the planning and the piecing above everything else. I also like the binding, which is unusual, I know. Many times I use the walking foot and do the Serpentine stitch. I like the look of densely quilted free motion but I tire of it quickly and regret starting it.
