If you do cut the crest, wait just a little longer till it gets bigger. You will have better success:). Once cut just put into some soil. Keep in the shade and dry till roots form. Once it gets roots you can begin to water and acclimate to more light:).

Yes, Kara is right. Crests are a little more vulnerable to rot, so waiting and keeping htem really dry before and after cutting is imperative, I also take a cutip or similar and thread it through the nooks and crannues, which can accunulate old dead leaves and be a haven for pests.

Thanks harry, that confirms I've been doing something right:-) At least it has worked with the smaller crests I have. Do you find that larger ones just literally reach the end of their ability to put out leaves? I've had some huge fan shaped ones, like with a 2 foot stem and a crest 2 feet across...I tried a number of times to cut and propagate and retain some of the cresting meristem?? but they eventually put out tiny unsustainable leaves. This would be after they are like 5 yeas old or more. Any advice or experience on crested echeveria is much appreciated!

That is great to know about keeping the on the drier side. I have started watering it less than my other echies and it seems happy with that.
