Start by reading about Apple Scab.

Can't see clearly enough to tell for sure but it could be russeting or scab, both of which Gala is quite prone to. Or looking at the holes in the foliage, it could be something as simple as hail damage.

Generally with all three the damage is superficial and just limited to the skin......the flesh is usually unblemished.

Another possibly is bitter pit, a calcium deficiency in the fruit. There are spray programs used commercially to raise Ca levels.

It does look more like russeting and it is not rough like scabbing. The bitter pit are smaller spots where these are more spread out on the surface and smooth. I thank everyone for informing of these conditions. It certainly is great to know and where to go to find all of this. If the pictures were sharper I'm sure it would have been easier to identify.

Fuzzy photos; can't really see exactly what you're asking about, though I'm leaning more toward russetting - but while folks are throwing out possibilities, also look up 'flyspeck' and 'sooty blotch' to see if perhaps they might be what you're seeing.
