I like some of the new, thin horizontal glass/metallic tiles in white that Daltile carries.

Stone and Pewter Accents makes beautiful slate mosaics in the Falling Water pattern, which would look fantastic with your counters and the cabinets. You can insert your choice of glass "blanks" to highlight the colorway you prefer.

If you want some drama...go with a red glass tile....preferably long strips and not squares...

Something to consider, I am currently remodeling kitchen with dark mahogany cabinets, black granite countertop and using stacked stone backsplash; looks fantastic.

I'm also considering stacked stone backsplash. What color/brand are you using? Any pics? thanks

By using beiges and soft browns against the dark mahogany with black granite countertops they will blend well without the surfaces competing for center stage while still making a impact. I won't have pictures for a couple of weeks but when I do I will share them. Thanks

I used a slate stack stone with same cabinets but in different area of the house where I used the red glass tiles in kitchen

We also have cherry cabinets and black granite counters. We went with a slate back splash and really love the look.

i was also going to vote for the Ontare residence photo above. but creativetileman's red glass tile is pretty compelling. in either case, you clearly need red knobs for your stove. :)

I don't think I've read this comment yet, but I think it's a design faux pas to add a tile backsplash when there is a granite one a few inches up the wall already. I think it looks awful when it's left on -- it needs to be removed safely somehow.

Lisa, while it is typically better if you can remove the small granite backsplash before adding a new one, it doesn't have to look awful. There are several kitchens with a dual backsplash that pull it off well, some of which were posted earlier in this thread. So it's really a matter of preference and budget.

I like the subtle glamour of this mother of pearl backsplash from a Houzz article "Virginia Estate".

Walker Zanger has a small mosaic sized tile that gives a similar effect...like a rough pearlized glass with a sea shell sheen.

I think that would be gorgeous. Stay away from color on tile, I think.....too locked in limiting.....

I cannot believe how much this looks like my kitchen, down to the light coming from the left. My sink is black composite granite, I have cherry cupboards with whiskey black finish, cosmic gold (looks more black) granite counters, and wood floor. My wall is simply painted drywall (light green). I bought a stainless steel panel to go behind the stove up to the hood, but never used it. I like the understatedness of the wall because both the counters and the cupboards are worthy of attention. Anything else--tile, whatever--would likely make it too busy, and in any case, would detract from the appeal of the cupboard-counter duo.
Alicia's idea, however, is very attractive even though it does take attention away from the counter-cupboards.

I have just completed a kitchen remodel, with natural cherry cabinets. The counter top is called Ubtuba, it is very dark almost black color. My back splash is porcelain tile that appears to be of natural slate variation mostly charcoal, grey, black, with a small amount of a dark beige. I used a charcoal grout filler, it is gorgeous!

cslouise, do you have a photo? We just purchased a house with dark cherry cabinets and ubatuba counters, and we're at a loss as to what backsplash we'll install. I like the light-colored porcelain tile look, but not sure if white will look good, so I'd like to see your kitchen!

A stainless steel backsplash would be beautiful. It would coordinate with the stainless appliances and sink and brighten up the area, especially if you have undercounter lights.

What about a white glass?

Just remodeled my kitchen and tore out the mirror backsplash. Put in black, white, gray, stone and glass. It looks great. In one of the pictures there was a staircase with a railing and glass panels. Where can I find someone to do that for me?

I totally agree with the comment made that you really need to take into account the color and tone of your flooring. The backsplash, counter and floors should relate to one another.

tygerlily5, you should probably start by looking up professionals in your area. There are companies that focus particularly on staircases. www.stairmasterz.com is a company we work with pretty often. But you may want to search Houzz professionals to get a closer contact, if you're not in the Orlando area.

We're having our kitchen countertop and backsplash renovated next week. We already have a wood floor and natural cherry cabinets and will be adding honed and leathered angola black granite countertops. We elected to go with a 4 x 12 inch lagos blue limestone backsplash. Very similar to the Pennsylvania Farmhouse backsplash in the first set of photos. We can't wait to see it all finished!

The Alaskan blue granite in Vanessa Brunner's photo (Case Design) is absolutely gorgeous. After googling it and looking at photos....I just may have chosen this if it had been in the warehouse when I chose my cosmic gold. I could look at that counter all day long...*sigh*

Think of what you want the eye to be drawn to, what you want people to notice about your kitchen. Wall? Counter? Cabinets? Floor? Some photos leave me confused as there are too many things grabbing for my attention. One's eyes want to rest somewhere.

you have already the colour on your counter top :) look at you brush and paper towel roll and go with them they both look so vibrant against the black . I will take a look and see what I find .

Be sure to look at Houzz examples that also have the short granite splash as you do. You can certainly find something that looks nice but look for like examples.

Id go with subway tiled glass. Then go to Ikea and get the LED strip kits. (four strips for $30) for under counter lighting.

Copper

You need to look behind you and see which color(s) in your home would look good there. Pick something neutral like the gray you have on the wall. Look for some depth with pearlized tile or a mix of pearl and glass.

I think we have the same kitchen! We have been having the same backsplash discussion as you for a month here at our house. We were thinking copper. Someone posted a copper and slate mosaic. Love that one! Our counter is black quartz with gold flecks.

Lanafriedman I'm interested in what you decide on and how you or the contractor maneuvers around the rail on the bottom of the cabinet. I have the same rail and have been contemplating adding a tile backsplash but can't picture how that would be done without taking off the bottom rail and reinstalling it. also, I'd like to know when adding to a partial backsplash like you have does the new add on become flush with the existing or is there a difference in thickness? Please let us know if you have made any progress.

I had always thought that the backsplash should be understated so as to not distract from the counters and cabinets, but photos like feeny's beal kitchen 2, or kstern07's are very nice.

Terra cotta might be s nice option. Even a porcelain tile with terra cotta mixed in. You might also consider a stainless steel backsplash.

You might want to consider a copper tile or even a stone subway tile.

Keep It Simple:

Black with Cherry will keep your kitchen neutral, elegant and timeless.

If you do go with a black backsplash - mix it up with a matte and gloss mix, and add under counter and up lights to be sure your kitchen sparkles at night.

Truthfully, everyone has an opinion - I would not take the look "down" to terracotta, or mix of brown/beige/orange/ copper tiles - make sense of the choices you have made, highlight them. Add your bits and bobs of colour in your accessories, food and drink! I've attached a photo of a kitchen refresh we just finished re-tiling. They had warm backsplash tiles and it brought the look of the kitchen down. We have to change the hardware to iron black, but this kitchen looks absolutely gorgeous now!
