Yikes, thanks. We do not live in this house but are looking at it...some electrical is updated so I'm hoping that the knob & tube is disconnected and no longer in use. Inspection will tell us.

Knob and Tube (K&T) wiring in of itself is not dangerous if it's in good condition. An electrician that is knowledgeable in K&T wiring can inspect and test the wiring to make sure it's not a risk. As far as the junction box you can use a non-contact voltage detector to see if it's live.

It turned out to be not live--inspector tested and the knob & tube had been replaced. This was in a house we were considering buying, but did not end up buying, so we don't have to deal with it in either case. Thank you--good education for the house we do eventually buy!
