No valance. And I would remove the piece of furniture in front of the sliders, the strip of wood above the sliders, and the things atop your wall cabinets. You obviously like clutter, but too much decor is, well, too much.

^I agree, no valance and move the furniture that is blocking the sliding glass doors. Consider getting a movable cart on which to place all of your small appliances and other items to clear up your counter space. Love your floors and kitchen cabinetry. You just need a little bit more hidden storage or to rearrange the extra items on a cart.

Folks, it's a small house, there is nowhere to move a movable cart so some years ago we replaced the movable one that always sat in the same spot with the much sturdier unit you see. This is a functional working kitchen, not a stage. The question is about the window treatment, not a general design critique.

*smacks hand to forehead* ...I didn't see that is a storage type/prep unit in front of your kitchen sliding glass doors. Sorry. Still, the answer is no valance on those SGD's.

I'm going to disagree. Since the storage cart is going to stay were it is I think you should add a stationary drape behind that area. Have a simple wood cornice made in the same style as your woodwork and paint it the same. The drape can be an off white semi- sheer fabric panel that will add softness to this area and give a better backdrop for the cabinet other than that black hole!

I like lynartist's suggestion, but more generally, I would only add a valence here if you are putting in some kind of blind or drape. Your woodwork is nice, so no point in hiding it, but the hardware for a window treatment is usually ugly and worth hiding.

if you would like a valance, just something simple is my suggestion.
