Weighted gauge question

Does the weighted gauge go on the stem on the left side of this lid?

Also, how do I know what the "jiggling sound" sounds like when the pressure is reached?

Thank you!

Wow that's an oldie! Looks like an old National #7. You sure it is safe to use?

Best as I can tell from the photo the gauge is already in place so yes the weight goes on the stem sticking up on the left. Is it the original weight or a replacement weight? Replacement weights sometimes require the stem also be replaced so the weight can fit.

As to the sound, different brands and models make different sounds. The only way you can really know is to do a practice run using only water and run it up to pressure until you see movement in the weight and hear and see the movement it makes and the sound it makes. Some call it a jiggle, some a hiss and spin, some call it rocking, etc.

Have you ever done pressure canning before? I assume you know it isn't something one can just jump into the deep end with? It has a substantial learning and practice curve associated with it.

Hi Dave, I was hoping you'd respond. Yes indeed, it is an oldie!! And you are right - an old #7. It's safe, as I have had the original gauge tested from the extension office in the past, and when the gauge was too far off, I replaced it. I do send it to Presto about once a year to make sure it's accurate. I have also replaced the gasket at least once (maybe twice), although I think it's high time to get another.

I have pressure canned for a number of years, but wanted to use the weighted gauge, so I wasn't tied to the kitchen as much. Hate having to check the gauge so many times. Thought at least if I was in earshot, I would be reasonably sure the pressure was being maintained. Can also do away with having the dial gauge checked too.

So just do a water test, ok. I assume I would check the dial gauge and when it gets up to pressure, see what the weighted gauge is doing and sounding like??

If I would submit a few more pics regarding other accessories that I got with the canner, do you think you or someone would be able to tell me what they were/are used for?

" I assume I would check the dial gauge and when it gets up to pressure, see what the weighted gauge is doing and sounding like??"

Correct but the weight - depending on which weight you are using on it as there are several different forms - will be the more accurate pressure of the two. The old original one that came on it isn't really a weight but a one piece 15 lb counter-weight that only acts as a safety device not a true pressure regulator. So I assume you have one that is adjustable?

Been many years since I used a #7 but sure, post the pics and I'm sure someone here can help.

Adjustable as in having a 3 pc. set - a 5, 10, and 15 "pound" (if that's the correct term) weight? It's a new set. Got it recently from Presto.

Dave, just checked and the old stem is bigger, but as luck would have it, I must have been thinking when I ordered, and got the narrower stem with the rest of the stuff. Now just gotta pump iron for a bit so I can crank the old stem off!

LOL! I know what you mean. Good luck.
