This is our first house that we bought! The kitchen has been done along the lines of, 'ya lets color the cabinets white and granite gray' but something's amiss..and i can't quite put my finger on it!!! What can I do to it to make it look Wow. Any help/advice would be highly appreciated..Thanks! :)

paint the island a different color, but not an overly neutral color.

I have concerns about the lack of support for the overhang on that island. That is extremely dangerous! I also would not suggest lighting over that island, as it really needs a great range hood with lighting, both for functional reasons, and to create a proper focal area.

If the counter is manmade instead of granite, it doesn't need the supports.

If you would consider spending a little, i would suggest stainless steel appliances. And i do agree with the comments above regarding the back splash. That would give it a different look all together.

Put down a couple of oriental runners with good underpadding.

Lovely kitchen. Does the stove have exhaust to remove fumes? Get a stool instead of the big chair at the desk area. New light fixtures. Remove 3" back splash and do a proper back splash. Some colorful accessories and perhaps window covering.

It depends on your taste. I think some blue porcelain dishes could be really pretty in your cabinets and a couple of vases above the cabinets. I couple of oriental runners on the floor. Is there a place for a window treatment. It's a lovely room.

Install small lights inside the cabinet and change the shelves to glass, that way your colorful dishes etc will be easier to see. Bright colors, too, just like everyone else said.

Thank you all for your absolutely great suggestions!!! I didn't think of the support for my granite slab..I didn't realize that it could be dangerous so thank you so much for pointing that out..The cabinets are not the new long ones..the paint on it is also thick and not smooth. I was thinking of coloring it a little creamier or off-white and definitely add a back splash, change the lighting and buy stainless steel appliances..phew!!! That would be a lot of money..haha

Kevin, you had mentioned about painting the island a different color, is that possible to color granite?

I agree that the lighting over the island needs work, but the first thing that jumped out at me was the backsplash (or lack thereof). That granite backsplash is just not cutting it. Remove and replace with a nice tile backsplash that goes up under your cabinets. That will make a world of difference. Also, color!

I think it's beautiful, but have to agree about the lights. those red ones would look great! Very unique

Check under the island top. Sometimes you'll find that the support is in the form of a straight bar that's attached to the cabinet so you can't see it. That's what they do if someone does't want to use brackets.

Maybe it's just me, but I find the "V" on the glass doors very distracting: too much of a focal point. Any chance you could get rectangular glass inserts, or one of the other nice glass doors in the photos?

    kate greene thanked latifolia

You could paint the island darker, maybe a rich navy. Maybe gold or brass hardware to warm up the kitchen? Granite would remain the same.

    kate greene thanked simstress

Yes I was thinking rich brown but navy sounds great too..V is old fashioned and distracting but won't it cost a lot to change the shape of the wood too? Great tip on looking for support under the granite..should I make the cabinets a little warmer color instead of white like cream maybe?

I agree, that little bow at the top of cupboards is distracting, but i think it would cost far too much to replace the doors and glass.

I had a contractor use a router to remove the panels of some Shaker-style doors. We had plain glass cut, and I set it in with a tube of clear silicone. Cheaper than buying the fancier cabinet doors from the manufacturer.

I see blank canvases in the oddest of places. The end of the island under the overhang is just begging for a stand-out mural that you will see every time you enter the kitchen, and make you go Wow.

Well it definitely needs some color in it. start filling those cabinets, add some plants, Id also recommended some colors for your future on counter appliances (Red/Lime green) And START COOKING LOL

Is there glass behind the little bow piece? If so, maybe you could take out the glass, have the "bow" straightened out and put the glass back it.

Which bow are you talking about? The 'V' on the cabinets?

Jeni when you said the end of the island is begging for a mural..I didn't understand that..is there a picture you can a share or explain it a little better. Thanks!

I'd design happily around those unusual glass cabinet fronts, rather than try to make your kitchen look like all the others down the block (and across the country.) If they were super strange or fussy maybe, but these are just unexpected. Keep them in mind when choosing a light fixture as I did above, and they'll make more sense. I might not have chosen them, but they are just the odd thing to inspire a unique and fantastic design. (Now everyone will want them LOL.)

yes. I wonder if you went along with suggestion from Barnhart and use the shape of this tile for the back splash to pick up the unique shape. Just a thought.

I am wondering if all the glass front doors are throwing you off.....I cannot even think of my keeping them tidy enough or have enough colored dishes/vases to show off. Other suggestion you received...lights, accessories is right on.

First, I love your kitchen. I also like those unusual glass front doors. Everything you see on TV is shaker, shaker, shaker! (Heck even my kitchen has shaker cabinets though when I bought this house 17 years ago, they just happen to be honey spice hickory though instead of white.)

Before you do anything definitely put some color in those cabinets and something coordinating on a countertop and take a new photo. Otherwise I agree with others about the light over the stove. And for those who wondered, it looks like she has a downdraft vent within that cooktop. It may not have as great a cfm as a hood but it's better than nothing.

I love the idea of a mural on that island end wall but unless it's done by someone who knows what they're doing.... Otherwise some coordinating molding would help.

I also like your black appliances just fine. I never understood the fascination everyone seems to have with stainless.

Thank you for your suggestions! I don't understand the concept of the mural. What does that mean? Can you explain it better or show me a picture? Most likely I am going to change the cooktop to gas. :) This house is 30 yrs old and the pictures are from the previous listing!

    last modified: 8 years ago

is your smoothtop a jenn air? you're going to have some non-simple issues if you go to gas, as the at-surface downdraft is ineffective and dangerous with gas. (it can suck the flames down the vent). a telescoping downdraft works well with gas (i have one) or you can go to an island hood (i have one of those too, over a smoothtop in my vacation home) but either of those will require some construction in your kitchen.

so, get all of the info before you call the plumber to add the gas line.

I didn't read all the responses, but your kitchen is beautiful. All it needs is pops of color and a new fixture over the island.

I like the idea of having colorful dishes in the glass cabinets like fiesta ware, also I think getting a more elaborate light fixture above the island may help. Honestly if you don't like the white cabinets and I'm sure don't want to replace everything what if you painted them a new color? I've seen lovely gray, blue or green cabinets. Just an idea. If this is your first home you should feel lucky to have a kitchen that large and nice, I can totally see wanting to make it your own though.

Hi - sorry it took so long to get back to you on the mural idea. I actually had another thought about it. On the location, I was thinking of the end of the island. I would recommend a vinyl print. That overhang looks like a great place to sit, likely on a high stool - and legs will swing or the stool get pushed away underneath it, and it will get damaged - or dirty. The vinyl will be easier to keep clean, and can be more easily replaced if damaged - or if you want a change. I've mocked up an idea to better show you what I mean. Does this answer your question?

The light fixture needs to be switched out. The glass-fronted doors don't work with the rest of the cabinetry. The swoops look very contrived. The room definitely needs colour.
