Heywood-Wakefield restoration?

I scored some nifty-but-worn midcentury furniture off Craigslist a few months ago, figuring we'd just sand & paint it. For $75 I got a china cabinet, a dining table with leaves, and four chairs. But a little digging makes me think this is Heywood-Wakefield, in which case painting it would be tragic/destructive. According to H-W's blog, this could be an early/rare set (judging by type of screws used and markings on the bottom of the table & chairs). I've painted furniture before, but I've never attempted to do a real refinishing. Anyone know a) who might be able to tell for sure if it's H-W, and b) how much it might cost to have the pieces restored? According to their website, H-W no longer helps with things like this.

I can't answer any of your restoration questions, but want to say that you scored some amazing pieces, even if they don't turn out to be H-W. Big congrats!

I know! The guy who sold it all had been keeping them in storage since his parents died. None of it in the best shape, which is why I planned to paint. Now I'm trying to figure out how to clean them up/make them presentable, whether they're H-W or not.

If the wood looks dirty I would gently wash it using a Magic Eraser. Of course you can recover the chair seats.

there is usually a makers mark in the top left drawer. usually this

do a search of early HW dining sets and see if you can match it. I can't find any w/those types of chairs.

i'm going to guess you have a knock off of some sort. still cool, but I wouldn't worry about transforming it. The wood and finish is in pretty rough shape. Have fun and paint it something vibrant.
