put paper towels underneath. Then blot with paper towels soaked in rubbing alcohol. Refresh as needed. When it looks clean, launder. Other folks here probably have other suggestions too.

Rubbing alcohol should do it.

Hairspray also works.

The rental company should know how to launder it. I always just fold the crumbs into the middle, make a ball and hand them back, stains and all. I understand wanting to get that much ink out, but maybe call them and make sure they wouldn't rather you didn't mess with it.

Try Amodex maybe? I've had success getting a really bad blue ink stain out on a comforter I'd washed and dried numerous times with stain on it (thus, it was definitely a "set in" ink stain). So after trying many things I saw some Amodex at Giant and decided to try it without much hope left, followed the instructions and it worked amazingly well. HTH.
