Why no induction rangetops?

Hi everyone. We're building a new house and trying to decide on appliances and such. We are currently looking at a 48" gas rangetop with a griddle. We have heard a lot of good things about induction cooking, but I can't seem to find anyone building that into a rangetop.

Most of the cooktops seem to have touch controls, which I HATE. I really would love to have knobs like are found on any normal rangetop or range. Am I missing something, or are there some units that I have missed?

Thx

Mike

I've only found 30" Viking Induction. Thermadore looks like they offer a 36". Miele, I cannot unearth what they offer in induction. That being said, those that I saw, online, Viking had knobs, but they're still electronic based. Thermadore touchpads.

I have a 30" induction range with knobs from LG. I've only had it about 6 weeks, but so far, so good. I love induction! http://www.lg.com/us/cooking-appliances/lg-LSE4617ST-electric-range

Samsung has an induction range with knobs. Is it that you're looking for a 48", that you can't find any?

Gaggenau has sort of knobs. People like knows, but they can be failure points with electronics. I think Gagg still has induction with the magnet knob. No penetration into the works to create failure. I have it. The on/off, memory, boost and timer are touch on and off, and the lockout is standard touch and hold, but the element controls and timer adjustment are done with the magnet knob, sliding and turning like an air hockey paddle. So it's kind of hybrid.

For range top, There's the Gaggenau Vario 400 series. It's very expensive, but if you can make the leap, it might work for you. Each unit is 15", with knobs on the cabinet apron like you'd find on a rangetop. One unit has two elements. Another has a very powerful large ring with sub rings for smaller pots, and an optional round bottomed steel wok with a transmission holder that is held to the unit with magnets. There's a teppanyaki unit for your griddle, and a good gas unit if you want to put that in the mix as well. I almost got those. There may be new or other units you'd be interested in as well. All have the big, front rangetop knobs. If you want the rangetop look as well, you can have the surround crafted out of stainless.

I hadn't seen the Vario 400 series. Interesting, but yikes, so expensive! Out of my range.

    That looks interesting.

The touch controls are my least favourite part of the 36" Wolf Induction I purchased earlier this year. You can't clean up spills until after you've finished cooking, and you have to watch constantly to make sure they haven't turned off or changed settings. Forget about changing heat settings if your fingers are damp. If the Bluestar had come out a few months earlier, I would have purchased it.

I know some people have a problem with the number of heat settings, but honestly, I don't think it makes much difference. Almost always I only use three or four of the settings during any cooking session, so 9, 11, or 152 would be about the same for me.
