Maybe post some pics, but yes- glass block is out of date. You can do doorless with sleek glass panels, though. They're not nearly as spendy as you might think. And if you do it right, you can always put frameless glass doors on, if you don't like it.

I have a doorless shower, and I LOVE IT! Except for a nice sized, operable window inside, we have no glass. Did it as a bit of a "cave"- tile, pretty niche for all our products, simple coordinating glass subway tiles behind. Actually acts as a "mirror" of sorts.

To work, though- it takes a bit of engineering, within slope. This prevents "splash out", and is as important as material choices. We also installed a linear drain. WOW. You can spend ALL the money for those, from plumbing companies OR- you can go out, as I did, and find commercial quality that looks amazing. I saved at least $400 bucks, doing it that way. Looks cool and works great.

I do have glass panels/doors in a couple of other bathrooms. They aren't used very often, but yuk- cleaning it really stinks!

Glass block is out of date...unless your house is retro atomic style MCM or art moderne.

HI -- Sheets of tempered glass is better to use now . Glass block is very 80's now and has been around since the 50's but is considered out dated . Florida is where it is still used a lot .

i was trying to avoid the sheets of tempered glass as the water here tends to leave a lot of spots... and I really do not want to have to clean it every shower... we are in FL and there is a lot of lime as our water comes from the aquifer

Glass block, properly designed would be very interesting, but we work with many clients who are not about "trends". And it really needs to work with the style and period of your home. Have done a couple very high end baths that incorporated glass block in the past 5 years. If you have that element elsewhere in the space, work with a good designer to determine how it might work. Obviously you need good quality contractors and suppliers. Personally removed some glass block from my own residence as it would not work with the remodeled space needs, but kept one interesting curved exterior wall of glass block. Again, trends are just what they are for the moment.

Frosted or patterned glass won't show the spots.

While I'm not personally fond of glass block, " out of style " is certainly transitory, my aunt's beautiful house built in the 30's or 40's has an entire wall of it in the dining room, sort of Art Deco or Moderne. I really don't concern myself with thoughts about what's "in style ", just whether or not it's appropriate for the application.

I have a frameless glass door, if you quickly squeegee after the shower you won't get spots and it cuts down on cleaning...like it would for any shower material. Some people may think that's too much of a pain, though

You cannot always take the word of a designer. A designer is just like any other person and have their own personal views and ideas. If you check different designers you will see that they may agree on some things but other things they will not agree on. A home should always look the way you want it to look and anything can fit almost anywhere. The problem with designers is you would be changing a lot of things almost every couple of years and unless you have the money to just spend then you need to go with your gut feeling. I have some glass block in my bathroom and it does not look dated at all it looks very beautiful so it really depends on your personal preference. And by the way I mean no disrespect to any of the designers out there but again everyone is entitled to their own personal views.

We just gutted this entire bathroom. The glass bock was already there! I personally think it works great, I have been asked if it was added, friends are loving it!

Today you don't need to use glass block, you can alternate with pre-manufactured acrylic block walls which come in a few block size and patterns. I used a few windows like that on a few projects but I was using privacy glass. But the company makes radius wall, etc.

As the style goes in or out... Is pretty much what you want to be in and what you want to be out. If you like the look go for it, not to mention this is a bathroom and you the only one will be using it and looking at it so its pretty much comes down to personal preference.

Realize this is an old.post but we are planning on renovating our master bath and we have a glass block shower and a glass block"window". I would like to replace with a glass block since we really like ours but a bit concerned about it being outdated.
