Fireplace options?

I am in need of some help!

I'm renovating a relatively small home (1300 sq ft) and have removed a large wood burning stove that was in the corner of the living room. It was on a base that measured 5' 7" x 5' 6". Needless to say, it was an eyesore that basically took up the entire room. The house does not have any gas hookups whatsoever, so I am only able to put in a wood fireplace. Electric fireplaces are out of the question because the fireplace is used more for "ambiance" and the electric lacks a real flame.

I am having a difficult time finding an insert that will not take up too much space of the room. Overall, I'm trying to have a much smaller corner fireplace and build a mantel. I have the venting already. My issue is, I'm unable to find any wood burning inserts that are smaller than 36". I can only find 36" and 42", and by the end of the non-combustible material additions, I'm getting a fireplace that measures more than 66" across. I'm not looking to exceed 52" across, diagonally-- my space is small.

Do you have any ideas? Can I use a smaller gas insert (since they come in 18"+ I believe) and use it as a wood burning fireplace as long as it's property vented? Can I build a smaller corner wood-burning fireplace from scratch?

I'm at a loss here, but am really looking to install a fireplace.

TL;DR:

I need suggestions/tips for installing a new corner wood-burning fireplace that doesn't exceed 52-55" wide including non-combustible material insulation around sides.
