Flooring Design Dilemma Basements

Replacing carpet

We recently had damage to our carpet in our basement. We live in a town home with two levels more contemporary style. We have wall to wall carpet in the basement (hall, stairs, spare room and entertainment room) and carpet in the two bedrooms upstairs. Is it ok to replace the basement carpet with a different colour and design ? or should we try to match the carpet in the upstairs ?

It doesn't have to match but I would recommend looking at something other than carpet for a basement. If you are going to go with carpet don't put anything expensive in because it will inevitably get ruined again.

It doesn't have to match. The important thing is the stairs matching the "main" living space. I call this the "public" areas. These are areas that visitors can see via a casual inspection. If the stairs going DOWN to the basement are visible from the main living space (public areas) then it is best to match the main level flooring.

If the stair carpet is a nice match to the main level, then leave it be. If the stair carpet has always been an eye sore, then now is a good time to change it.
