Living room update

Hey everyone, I've attached some progress pics of our 1974 ranch!

We're getting moved in and unpacking the last of the boxes. Had the popcorn removed and now time to paint the walls. I'm hoping for some suggestions:

1. Wall color. I want clean yet warm white on white. Any recommendations of warm white (BM dove white?) and then crisp white for baseboards and window/door trim?

2. A comfy side chair + where to put it? (I'd like to get away from ALL mid century furniture)

3. Any other suggestions for decor? I like textures natural elements and neutrals with a little soft color.

4. Were replacing both walls of sliding doors (1 living room 1 dining room). Going to go with basics like from Home Depot because I haven't seen any other modestly priced alternatives. Any thoughts?

5. While the floors look decent in pics, they are cheap vinyl and show bubbles, scratch and peel up easily. We've been thinking of getting a lighter color to brighten the space - dark seems to suck all the light.

Lastly, if we decide to get new floors - is it important to do the work in a certain order? Or can we do walls and baseboards then floor later.

Thanks!
Mandy

Hi all, I tried your suggestions of turning the sofa to face the fireplace and it cut off the walkway between the tv. The sofa feels too big for the space to do that. I think adding a chair or two to the side will work best.

I've realized the rug is too large for this space. It eats up the whole room. I'm searching for a 6' x 9'. Any ideas for rugs that will help bring a little bit of color in? Thinking mostly neutral with some sage, greens or blues?

oh! and, which light in place of the ceiling fan?

I don't think the rug is too big in the last room photo you showed; I quite like it. Not really a fan of either light for that room...

    West elm? ....

nice room. I like the rug too, although one w/a little color or pattern wouldn't hurt.

I like Melissa's last hanging pendant.

look at this fireplace,,,almost like yours. decorate yours like this. you need more of a horizontal pic. I'd remove those flowers.

BTW, you could totally do a hide rug like this, over the rug you currently have. it's fine to layer these. like the one below: and notice plant!

or one like this: I think a white pouf would work in your spot too. (no disco ball)

for the corner next to lamp, try a tall plant like this

or even one like this with a nice color pot.

Can you mount your tv to the wall and get a warm wood credenza/media unit? craigslist has vintage ones for a few hundred.

I think this decor would also look good on your fireplace (not the lamp) the longer photo, the little plants/books.

I really like a warm walnut type credenza for your tv space though.

    Great suggestions Beth...
Thanks guys! Beth, I love that third light too!!!

I also love your ideas for decorating the fireplace - it's way closer to the style I was wanting. THANK YOU for the inspiration.

I was thinking of downsizing to a 6x9 and placing the front of the sofa on it, the 8x10 felt really large as it came close to the fireplace and also the media console. It felt large for the room. I'll keep thinking on it.. any ideas of style of rug?

do you like the idea of the hide over your existing one? how about a pouf? leather color or the white? the plants, some other art, ?

do some nice, white oak, or doug fir french doors.

maybe some artwork over on the tv wall? Google image search, "modern boho living room" and see tons of ideas

as for rugs, if you don't like the hide/layering thing,,,then:

tons of elements in this pic you can use too. the wood chair, pouf, tables, art, pillows, baskets...

all of these pics have the same style you like. pick and choose items you like and apply them to yours.

if you had everything neutral, one or two of these velvet peacock chairs would be stunning!

you must get a fig leaf tree and put it by the window.

notice the rug layering in this photo.

Awesome thanks guys! I'm already in progress of swapping the fireplace decor for art - 2 photographs and a nice sculpture piece. Looks better already!

The house IS mid century but I don't want it to be too cliche with all mid century decor. Love the distressed rugs - may get a navy one with hints of tan. Will stick with 8x10 per your recommendations.

I'd LOVE to have pretty metal doors. Unfortunately our neighborhood value doesn't allow for anything except new White final doors.. they're already ordered. Metal or wood we're going to be twice the cost and we have already been told new windows aren't going to bring us value. Hoping once we paint the walls white they just kinda blend in and the view of trees outside is the focal point.

I'll continue to post progress pics! Thank you all!

Mandi,,,cancel your order. you can buy wood doors, french doors, at home depot for 600,,,or get some used ones off of Craigslist for $100. yes you can. i sold mine for that price. all wood. learn how to put them in yourselves and save 500.

    solid mahogany. new. 600

used. 150. you could clean and paint these and they'd be brand new

even these new, masonite doors from HD run about 400. anything is better than a vinyl slider!

don't know where you live, but it's worth a shot to shop around.

oh man Beth.. they're already ordered and contract signed. I wanted sliders to keep the look as similar to original as possible. I realize vinyl will take away from it, but the other two options I found were fiberglass or wood and both more than 2x expensive. I'm including photos from the original listing so you can see the two walls of windows for reference.

ok.. so keeping w/more the mid century type vibe. I just like french doors so much better. but if you keep these doors open a lot, then the sliders are a good choice. Will you be doing drapes? are you keeping the same door casing?

hey yeah, I like french doors too - trying to walk the line of keeping the house mid century-ish, without having every single piece mid-century.. There are actually french doors I'm thinking of painting black on the wall opposite the fireplace - they open into my office.

Thinking no drapes or shades on the doors. We have a pretty private back yard, lots of trees and plan to keep the doors open - we live in a temperate climate.

ok. yes,,me too. I don't have anything on my doors and most of my windows.

love black french doors. I did mine own in black. I bought these solid wood, oak, french doors, raw. They were pre hung, but completely unfinished. I wanted to stain them ebony. The cost was 1100. Getting them finished would have doubled the price. luckily I know how finish wood. took a bit, but worth it!

bought raw white oak boards and did those as well for the door and window casing

Hi, Which flooring color? Or even an lighter color like white oak?

    (Ideally gray or black)
    last modified: 8 years ago

for sure do a White Oak.

maybe French white oak. looks great w/your black and white/mcm decor.

the one above is engineered, wire brushed, and hand oil finish.

I think your other choices are a bit 'heavy' looking. plus, the dark is harder to keep clean.

do you like the natural Acacia? (that's what I have in my pic, above). It comes in wider planks and has gorgeous coloring.

where did you get your rug?

Carmen, btw, that rug and sofa she has would look good w/your room. But I'd maybe layer that rug w/a hide or something w/a bit of color or pattern.

Another vote for white oak. I had it in my last house and loved it. It's so pretty.
Thanks, I was afraid the white oak wouldn’t look great next to a white fireplace and with all light colored furniture. We need to do luxury vinyl planks for a few reasons and white oak is tough to find that’s not too yellow/ orange.

The rug can be found on all modern. It’s the by the novogratz.
BM White Dove, IMO, will not look dingy. I had it in my former house, and I loved it when the sun hit it. It reminded me of marshmallow.
Hi all, We’ve installed new lighter floors and painted the entire house a very light greige.

We have some furniture but I’m not loving the rug, and thinking of replacing the coffee table - perhaps even the media stand. Theme is casual/linen yet classy. See images attached.

Any suggestions of what to do next?
Here are some inspirational pics including a potential flat weave rug with a textured print (by four hands)
    last modified: 8 years ago

love it! nice job. are you leaving the window as is or have you thought about doing a woven wood blind like shown in the first pic?

I do believe a larger picture would work better on the mantel. (i'd move the vase down to the right in that empty spot. )

something at least double or triple the size of whats there. and spread them out from each other

This is a shrine to St. Television rather than a social space. It’s very attractive, but it’s hard to imagine conversations taking p,ace.

a shrine? really jbtany? not everyone has 10 rooms in their house. why is it so hard to imagine a convo? you sit on the couch and speak. Not a big deal

It’s really lovely. I agree with Beth and I’d also maybe move the lantern off the floor and try it on the hearth.

I actually like the rug, from what I can see of it.

Is that a west elm sofa?
Hey, yes the sofa is Brooklyn from West Elm. It’s actually not super comfortable and we were considering getting the charcoal Harrison sofa from room and board. But I do like the look so we’re going to keep it a while longer.

I would prefer a low pile rug, flat weave rather than this shag rug. It gets matted down where our feet rest and is looking kinda drab.

I actually agree and feel like the tv takes up an insane amount of visual space. But, compromises, am I right? Haha so any suggestions I can do to make the space work are welcome.

    Hi —
I want to put in a good word for the mantel arrangement that came before the round mirror —- it wouldn’t have to be the cactus picture, but the rectangular art off set (so it emphases the asymmetrical fireplace) strikes me as more “hip” than the symmetrical mantle arrangements you show.

The off-set fireplace is a neat feature, and with your sofa and other pieces it looks stylish without being a retro museum.
I LOVE the rug and sofa before you changed things. The spindle leg side table with leafy plant hides the cool sofa and looks too fussy, I think.

Nb- you don’t HAVE to have a side table, especially if you have modular “coffee table” where you can pull a surface closer to seating if you _need_ it (for the big game? For granny’s tea and buskers, etc)
Really pretty room! Looks light and airy. I’m no pro by any means, but I think the space would look more finished with window treatments. Two end tables so people can rest a drink. I would also flank the media stand with two chairs. I think that would create a more inviting conversation area. Love what you have so far. Good luck.
I agree that white oak flooring will totally dilute the white fireplace wall :-/
I think the black trim around the fp box calls for flooring the color you already have. I also think your original rug was GREAT — size and color. It looked like a crisp wool suit to me :-)
Great ideas thanks guys!! I like the idea of offsetting the fireplace, and also flanking the tv with chairs.
Congratulations on your new home! I actually love your pics. You have great taste.
Sorry - please ignore my “no white oak” comment — I didn’t read all comments and hadn’t seen how nice it looks!

(Wish there was a “delete” button!)
This side table would be cute next to the sofa instead of the plant stand.
New comment here (fresh eyes) and just want to say I like what you are doing so far and you have gotten some good advice...I just have to say I really liked the 2 light options you posted back on 10/7. The one installed now (replaced the fan) really is too small and better suited over a table. The 2 you posted would work much much better. Just my 2 cents.
I love the light, too, but agree it’s a bit small....

Something like would look really cool...
Love the ideas, thanks guys! I agree the light is small, haven’t found another I like better yet. I wanted the 3 glass west elm pendant suggested a while back but the install wouldn’t work on a beam unfortunately. I’ll keep my eyes out for another larger light.

I think I’m having a hard time pulling the room all together. To me, it’s a bit too vanilla, I want more organic linen and floor pillows or something?!

Also will attempt nice soft white window treatment on the window nearest the fireplace to soften the window but not call attention to the dressings. The other doors will remain uncovered - I’m unsure how to dress windows on such a valued ceiling, and want to keep it super clean looking.

I’ll keep looking for items and post updates, again super appreciate everyone’s input!

I just came across your post and wanted to say that I love how your room has transformed. You are making me want to re-style my family room! I love your coffee tables too, where did you get them?

Thanks! The coffee tables are clearance from pottery barn. I think I think they’re still available at pottery barn Australia. When I ordered these they said backorder for 4 months but they arrived in a couple weeks.
Beth! I just noticed the pictures you had posted of the white horse pic and vase with olive branches, I love it!! What is the smaller brown flower looking thing in the corner? I love the natural color of it.
Just got a new rug and coffee table. Love the rug but not sure about the coffee table. Thoughts?
Here’s a closeup of the new pieces!
I love both! Do you have room for a swivel lounge right next to the sofa? something like this
    https://mobile-beta.westelm.com/products/austin-swivel-armchair-h2084
The chestnut leather could bring in more of that warm caramel tone which will play off the new coffee table.
Hey thanks! We could replace the current chair we have in the corner with a warm leather - love the idea!

Any suggestions for a new media console? At first I thought the coffee table was too large for the space but now I think it’s because it’s competing with the media console
  • 8 years ago
    Omg that rug....

    The table is great, too....

I think a wall unit maybe????
    Something with some presence....
Actually I don't mind the chair in the corner as is....I was suggesting the leather chair for the sofa area (left side if facing sofa). I like a long low media unit for your situation....something white or black if you want your walnut table to be the accent.
You could do 2-3 Crate and Barrel Ascend units side by side...what's nice is they come in 3 finishes and open shelf or sliding door for closed storage. The height would be low and sleek and would keep your FP as the focus and keep the TV at a comfortable viewing height. I feel something tall would throw the room off balance.
Sorry they are called Aspect not Ascend...
    https://www.crateandbarrel.com/aspect-47.5-modular-sliding-door-storage-unit/s556708
We have them in the walnut finish...they are really well made and what I like is they are stackable. They are flexible if you ever want to reuse/reconfigure in a different setting.
