I'm not sure what dimension you mean by "long"......You really should have a 42" wide hood over a 36" cooktop. From what you've written, it looks like the really limiting factor would be the 8" duct, not the 7'11" ceiling.

Here are four island hoods at ventingdirect.com (NFI) that are 42" wide, 8" duct, 15-20" tall, and max ceiling height 90-100". That web site has lots of ways to narrow your hood search.

Any local metal worker can cut down the chimney cover for a range hood to make it shorter.

Toronto Veterinarian, by long, I meant tall. The existing unit is 5" too tall.

mtnfever - Those are all very nice but they are more expensive than I can afford.

The Cook's Kitchen - At 5" too tall, they would have to cut into the housing to shorten it, but it's the best option so far. Lesson learned though, next time I wait to purchase.
