You could have any type of rug so long as it stays within your seating parameter and would not interfere with the wheelchair path. That said, this rug looks to have a low pile.

As for window treatment, how about a roller shade that stays up during the day?

Hi clover -- Is this a family room? How does it need to function -- play/tv/reading/homework etc? Will there be a large screen television, and is your handsome console possibly going to "houzz" components? This is a nice big space that gives you a number of options.

Clover, check out flor.com. for rug options. Great, versatile and durable floor covering and comparatively affordable. The wheelchair will sail over this product. I have to say, I am green with envy over your sideboard. I am crazy for "mid-mod". Good for you! So now, where to put it.... I would recommend pulling the sofa away from the wall, toward the fireplace and placing your new sideboard where the sofa was. This is a nice sized room and grouping the upholstery in the middle of the room will make it feel both spacious AND cozy. Allow enough space behind the sofa for wheelchair access, which should be easily do-able. Now, add a great mirror over and the pair of lamps on your new treasure. Voila! This also keeps the windows clear of furniture which I always like to do, if possible.

I did get a beveled mirror with the sideboard everything under $100 and the mirror is big. What size lamps?

No tv n the room we have a desperate but small tv/family room. This area is the first room you see when you walk in the house and generally visitors sit here-although now it's the deaf to playroom

No problem......pick or buy Pussy willows and put them in retro 1970 vase and hang a family portrait!! ..The 1970's is very much back in style..Throw down a shag rug and a few bean bag chairs ...Paint one wall chocolate brown and accent with some bright orange/yellow fabrics. You can find a ton of fun 70's stuff at your local thrift stores. Rock the 70's look it's easy and very inexpensive.

Re: lamp size: The most important thing will be visual weight. They should be narrow and tall and delicate, in keeping with the sleek visual lightness of the piece itself. If the mirror that came with it will fit vertically, hang it that way, versus horizontal. Now that I see the room more clearly in the additional pics, you could actually place the sofa perpendicular to the fireplace, on the right side, if you chose to. I would definitely move it away from the wall, in any scenario. This much space is such a luxury. Use it! This room has HUGE potential. Good Luck.

Just tried to the right of fireplace doesn't work will try window next. This thing is really heavy gotta get it right soon or hubby will kill me.

Am I understanding there is a walker involved, as well? I urge you, as will have your OT, not to place carpeting other than wall-to-wall in that instance. The walker will pull up even the edges of carpet tiles with use, and the chance of accidents is statistically higher for any carpeted area, so even wall to wall is best with a low pile.

You may be able to pick up some mid-century modern lamps at a thrift store.

Is the general rule to have two lamps on sideboards? Can I just do one?

It would be a CRIME to hide those floors with carpet!!!! There are some great designs available in indoor/outdoor rugs which are not very thick. That could make wheelchair access much easier? And, a bonus to that is that cleaning the rug would be easy.

I think studio10001 was referring to the dangers of walker and area rug. If there is a walker in use I'm sure clover22 is aware of any dangers and wouldn't put her son in harms way. Perhaps if area rug is used you could attach to floor with an adhesive of some kind

Yes. Chairs will eventually pull up rug edges too, but the consequences are less drastic. (this assumes speeding is not allowed in the house?) Your "doormat" post suggested both conveyances would be used, in which case drapery and softgoods should take the place of carpet as warming acccents.

A friend recommended tarkett flooring-does anyone know anything about it? My son is pretty slow and needs help in his wheelchair and walker so no danger with accidents.

They make vinyl, laminate and wood products, some of which are click tiles. Useful for sporting areas and for sound absorbtion; you can get full info on their site.

I found something similar for my son, he uses it as a Stand for his flat screen TV. It is his favorite piece of all my rescue mission finds.

Found these beauties at Goodwill today but am not sure they are quite right. Would love to hear what others think. I am also attaching a pic of the sofa pillow and the new mirror over the fireplace (note I will change the legs on the sofa so they are wood and more "mid centuryish" and will prob. add some type of shelf between the fireplace and the mirror. Ignore the junk...we're a work in progress!

Lamp color is great with colors in your room and the mid century piece.

Took your suggestions Keitha so very grateful for the pics you posted....really wanted something blue but I think that will take me a good long while to find for just a few bucks. These lamps were only $13 for the pair...I went in looking for a bowl and "bam" there they were, smiling at me. The shades on them were really long so I guess I'll be on the hunt for something shorter--more like the ones in the pics you attached. Does the amber color really go with the pillows? Also worried the mirror is too plain.

Mirror is a little plain, but might be good with whatever mantel shelf you install. The lamps are very neutral so I think they would be fine with your other accent colors. Keep your eyes open for other mirror options, something may jump in your lap like the lamps did!!!

If you are embracing the mid century vibe, then these mirror choices could be interesting, at least a bit of inspiration. Mid century fireplaces often didn't have a mantel or had one that was part of larger wall shelf unit but these are kind of a good compromise if you want a mantel :)

Thanks! I actually don't want a mantel it just looks so bare right now...have a sunburst type mirror in the entry way now si maybe I should go with something different????????? I really like sunbursts though...is 2 too much?

A simple, thick floating shelf in a stain to match the new piece of furniture would be pretty nice.

No, there's no reason you couldn't have them in two separate areas. Crossed posts, a mantel is definitely not necessary

Love a series of mirrors or even the multi tiny mirrors in above post. Art is always a great option. Art.com has great stuff in many options of frame or no frame, printed directly on canvas. Also photography would be great in large size. If you could find something vintage in your room accent colors that would be ideal, but maybe not so easy to accomplish. Then again, look at what you've found so far!!

What a beautiful piece! My first thought was under the window but is there a lot of sunlight? My concern is the top would fade in that location.....

Update--it's under the window now with the two African chairs to the left (if you are facing the room) in the corner. Found a great vinyl turquoise cushion and wood Danish chair at a yard sale (I LOVE it but after 5 hours of scrubbing with everything under the sun I still can't get all the ground in dirt out). Anyway, I am trying to figure out where to place the chair for maximum impact. I also want to get rid of the hideous microfiber sofa but it's easy to clean and it opens and has storage underneath (a Godsend for keeping the kiddie toys under wraps). I'll likely put the blue chair in that space over time so I have a reading corner of sorts (also found a great silver bullet type lamp that might work by the chair and bookcase). Can I just say I really an appreciative of all the great suggestions and ideas from my fellow Houzzers. It might take me some time but I am certain this room will be just perfect in a wee bit. Oh one last thing, I did find two great blue glass pieces for the sideboard (one attached used Keitha's lamp phots as imspirations) so am not sure what do do now..use the amber lamps or the blue glass vase type thingies????

Either might work - more height would be nice there, as well as accentuation of lighting, but if lamps are needed more elsewhere in the room, the blue glass is an attractive alternate for the sideboard.

Want to see how this room worked out.
