Hmmmm, when I was reading about propagating bamboo. They suggest putting candle wax on cut end on top to prevent rotting and/or moisture going down bamboo. Here is plant my sister in law gave me from TX. It is doing fine but I will need to do something when raining season comes to avoid rotting. Mine is a little more easy as I can put "cap" on the trunk. Yours is trickier.

I would keep it dry and out of the rain. I would also take some isopropyl alcohol and wipe the area clean. You can use Sulfur and sprinkle it on the wound to keep it clean ( fungicide) and after a week or so, you could seal with waterproof wood glue. Some also like the caulking "Dap" sealant from Lowes in a tan color. Sometimes if it's an old wound and it look s like there isn't any issues, Mother Nature also has a good remedy.. it heals on its own.

Personally, I would seal it with Elmers Waterproof wood glue after I cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol.

Agree with Laura. Sometimes leaving it is the best option but IMO there is a lesser of two evils... how much rain water will get caught versus how much moisture (from transpiration) will be trapped under the sealant.

I have used Dap Caulk as a temporary sealant and have also used candle wax. they are both about the same provided there isnt much flex in the area. if there is the Dap is better. I try to apply the material from the top of the wound downward in the best attempt to limit rainwater intrusion without fully closing it up at the bottom. Much like construction weatherproofing where you leave weep holes. You just have to watch for possible insect problems.

Another method is to limit the ability for a wound to hold water. In the image below I had a broken branch which had rotted back leaving a cavity. I removed the dead areas as best as possible without damaging green tissue and then cut a notch to ensure water did not pool in the cavity. Eventually I will remove this entire joint but didn't want to do it until next spring. The Image was taken in late May so it will have helped give me one more season of blooms and this cultivar has shown itself to be rather pesky about being pruned late in the year.
