Violent Cactus Dismemberment

Hurricane Harvey blew this guy down. We were on the edge of the storm and got 8" of rain and 40 MPH winds. I went to pot it up and I felt some softness under the skin First I thought it was a small rotten spot but the more I cut the larger it got. I have a bit of base left. There is less that 2" remaining above where that knife ends and the top . The original cactus was over 2' tall. I have had it for awhile. I am sad . I sure hope the base pushes the small pup out on it's side. I sprinkled the base with cinnamon. I tried to rescue him but it was hopeless.

I have shown you my gory death shot, show me your sad plants. We need to remember them too. This plant gave me a great deal of enjoyment. I had him for over 10 years.

Here's a sad rotted pot full of Superbum. Rotted last winter. This was such a beautiful pot. I was only able to save two pieces. There around here somewhere;).

Ugh this one makes me sad. My beautiful Toothpick cactus rotted last winter. Tried to save him with no avail:(. He had lovely woody spines that were up to 4 inches long.

I can't seem to grow this next one. I will have an Aeonium tabuliforme that I will forget to move and then it will get fried. This has happened to me twice. It just never bounces back.

I went to put googly eyes on the pot of this cactus and noticed the rot, so I did some emergency surgery and am hoping for the best!

AWW, Casualsweater, that is a heartbreak. Kara, That toothpick one is sad and you have lots of company on the a. tabuliforme. I have killed that one in short order. I hear that it is a hard one to grow. What is that rule/suggestion that one should not give up till you have killed three of them.

We buy them with great hopes and some , Like the Oreocereus trollis above was with me so long, I thought it would be with me forever. There is delusional thinking for you. It is a common cactus to find, so I will be getting another some day in my future.

Sorry for everyone's losses. It's a sad sight, indeed. I didn't have a hurricane and I've lost about 6 plants to rot this year???? I hate when that happens, especially in older babies.

I'm trying to save a rare Echinopsis hybrid that I overpotted, but I don't hold out much hope. (In that case it was my own fault and plus I was killing it with kindness.)
