can you hang this very close to the ceiling or flushed to it without using the long rods?

what's is your open ceiling height? you would need to keep at least one rod (total 3 separate rod at 13" in ea.) to support the fixture weight from top canopy!

Fixture height: 12.5"+ rod height 13"= total height: 25" in/ 2.1 fts. your open ceiling height need to be least 8 fts+. any question. Please let us know.

Total minimum height: 1 canopy 1.75" + 1 rod 13"(total 3 adjustable rods)+ main fixture 12.5" =27.25" (inches)/2.27'(fts). Thank you!
