Kitchen light fixture

I have a new kitchen under construction 18'6" x 10' that's wired for only on light fixture in the center along with a pair of pendants over an island. Ceiling height is 9' 6" what fixture is best to give adequate lighting and best coverage for the entire space?

Hard to say with only a photo of the ceiling... no cans? You are relying on a single light and two pendants?

What is the floor, counters, cabinets and is it open to another space or an enclosed room... appears to be enclosed. Not sure what you decor likes/dislikes are so very hard to say.

Your idea books show a lot of the same lighting styles for pendants... why don't you choose some pendants as you've saved in your idea book and a complimentary light? Just do the math on your island length so you know the size you might need if 2 or 3 pendants.

My kitchen is 12x12 feet and has four cans at 4" size plus under-cabinet lighting. I would say that your plan is way too little. Ideally you want a can over every section of counter (every prep area) plus the sink; you can substitute a couple of stretches of track lighting, with track heads aimed at most of those same zones, but you'll have more shadows in your working space. Or you could do fewer cans, a bunch of under-cabinet light, and still have a central fixture for most of the ambient light. Any way you look at it, you don't have enough right now!

It's a open space (18' 6" x 35') that leads into the dinning room than has 4 recessed cans and another fixture (we'll do a chandelier or semi flush mount fixture), then into the living which has the same. I don't want to reopen the ceiling and have the electrician add and cans or junction boxes so I'm looking at the best single fixture for that space

We have a lot of windows in the space so in the day it's perfect

Porter the pendants are fine. I'm wondering if they would add the lighting the space along with whatever fixture we choose or will it only light down on the island

There are no single fixtures that will light up a kitchen enough. You really need good light to cook. You say you don't want to open the ceiling now, but now is the best time to take care of it.

Will you not use your kitchen in the evening?

I've seen a light fixture that is basically a racetrack dotted with spotlights. I don't know what this type of fixture is called.

Every area where you will be working, including the sink, should be well-lit. Recessed lighting plus lighting over the island are really necessary. Have your contractor and electrician add them to the job. It may require an added cost, but you will be sorry if you don't give yourself enough light in every part of the kitchen.

You may need track lighting, some come in a form of a pendant, also under cabinet lighting

Michael, depends on your pendants. Pendants with shades will be a down light. Pendants with clear glass or lantern style with no glass only a frame per se will give more light. Not sure if that answers your question.
