so you are replacing what is in there totally? generally you furnish the room and then paint the room.

There is no need to change the wall colour unless you don't like it or it's in bad condition -- and it looks good to me. But the white brick on the fireplace doesn't work -- I've chosen to repaint in a slightly darker grey than the wall. For the rest, I've been playing nicely. I'm not suggesting you should have the back of our sofa facing the TV on the back wall, of course, I had to use the pics I could get so ignore placing for now.

On my monitor, the wall colour looks like a cool grey while the carpet looks a warm greige so, I'd warm up the wall colour. Alternatively, you could change the carpet, if you prefer a cooler palette but, it looks like it's in good shape. I'd definitely get new drapes and frame/wrap it around the other window as well. I like the current hanging height but I'd use a wider rod so they retract onto the walls instead of covering the windows. You could pull some of the colours into your accents and cushions. Personally, I don't like the look of a rug on a carpet and, I don't think it functions well (slides around, tripping hazard, etc.). I would paint the fireplace with layered colours, to get a true stone look. It's actually quite easy if you purchase a product called Brick-a-new. I used it once and the results were amazing, but it is a bit pricey. If you enjoy DIY, I'm sure you can mimic the results on your own. My monitor may be off but, the mantle looks very red to me, and a bit skimpy. I'd replace it, or at least paint or stain it. I find sectionals look bulky and casual but, if you need the seating or want a casual look, they are great. If not, a sofa with a chair or two and tables and lamps is quite elegant.

I am not in favor of painting fp, one problem on another. I am also part of the crew that is against sectionals. i like the rug idea, i think of it more as space definer. I thought there was a way you could secure it, but i have never tried.

ok, i looked at your 3! pics and got the following clue, you like gray with a single color pop. your style is sleek and modern.does this sound right?will you be using a tv in there or will there be a different room for this? is there anything else we need to know? some better pics of the room would be better. thanks

Having, it looks on my screen as though the fireplace is already painted white. So changing the colour is no big deal.

rina, you think ? somebody said it just made it worse, because of number of layers to remove before fixing?

I don't think there's any layer removing to be done -- some sanding and an undercoat may be necessary, depending on the existing and new paints used. If you are thinking of fixing by stripping down to the bare brick, frankly I would never even try that. Once it's painted it stays painted, one way or another, as far as I'm concerned.
