It wouldn't be my room though (am a writer occasionally too).

I love the couch with the pillows on it. Really like the idea of two different pieces of art on the mantle. The round tables are fun, don't fit together and thus somehow do. The wood on the floor has a beautiful color.

BUT: I prefer the book cases in a warm wood. And I really dislike the books organized by color like that. And I would have enjoyed wooden beams in a warm color on the ceiling. Would have put in a few really big plants in impressive pots, instead of the scrawny ones here. I miss the point of the blue chair completely (just leave it out). Am not fond of the lights either, for they have not enough substance.

But then again: you did not design it for me. Yet: to me it looks like you tried to combine too many styles into one. As long as he likes it though, nothing is ever wrong.

Lovely! Love it, but don't understand the brown chair in the corner

Very nice....Light and airy with an excellent use of color. The rug is nice and not typical. The wall art is simple, but still makes a statement.

How does he/she turn off the lights over the bookcases. If these are not on a switch it could be a pain.

jck910 is right! A conversation grouping includes some seating that faces each other and actually encourages conversation.

And yet there is no place to write! Need a desk in that room.

I'm with @jbgoeller, I like pretty much everything here, except that brown chair that's shoved into the corner. It's not the chair I have an issue with, so much as it's placement. It looks like an afterthought to me, and makes the room feel crowded. I like the blue chair, personally. I think it's fun and unexpected. I really like the art too, and although perhaps impractical, I think the books look nice arranged by colour. I might have preferred to see the bookcases in a wood finish, but the white looks good too. It's a nice room; it looks stylish, but doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. In any case, I assume the client is happy with it? In the end that is all that matters.

Most writers, or readers for that matter, probably would want their books organized by subject or author and not by color.

The colored books turned me off.

I like much of what is going on... The lighting above the bookshelves bugs me and the way the books are arranged is far too anal retentive. I think that the shelves should have some art objects mixed in, they look a bit boring for my tastes with all the 3d at the top. I would have gone all the way to the ceiling with the shelving and avoided a "dirt collection" area on top.

As to the art: layered art, huge no-no! Art is supposed to be observed for its own value and cannot be viewed properly in that way, stacked like it's not worthy.

Not crazy about the blue chair, doesn't seem to mix well, IMO, but I have no problem with the brown one except for the position. I think it should be switched with the blue and sit where it can breathe and not block access to the books. Form follows function.

I like it and, as an author, I'd find it both soothing and inspiring.

I like so much about it but the books are just awful. I'll assume the writer made you do it. Also assume the writer prefers tv to reading since the chairs awkwardly block the books to pay homage to the tv

I don't like it. I don't like the books being all colored and organized by color. I don't like the layout of the room all facing the tv (or whatever is on the other side of the room). There is no gathering place for conversation. It would look better if furniture grouped at fireplace. The tv could be off to the other side with the brown chair. I don't like that big gray ottoman (or whatever it is). It competes with the round table which I don't like either.. I don't like 2 pieces of artwork on the mantle that are both so big. I agree some large plants are called for. I like the artwork behind the couch. I like the built in bookshelves. Sorry to have such negative reactions. There is a lot I like but the downsides overpower it for me.

Thank you everyone for your feedback! The clients have lived in the home for many years and have been slowly updating it room by room. Client is a writer, which gave me the inspiration for the bookshelves and wall to wall books. Amazingly, ALL of these books are from the client's personal collection. A lot of them are very meaningful and I wanted to highlight them in a unique way. Because she had so many beautiful hardbacks and varying colors, I thought that color coordinating them would be a fun way to add an artsy feel to the otherwise neutral space. We kept the furniture pieces and accents neutral and monochromatic in color so that the books are the star of the show.

Love it , especially the blue chair which gives a lift to the color scheme . Art work great and the book arrangement gives a great splash of pink. Particularly liked the rug.

Love it, including the books arranged as art! I can only guess that the arrangement of the furniture meets the needs of the client, but even with the odd placement, the pieces all looks great together! There is plenty of space to move the chairs around if they want to set up the seating for conversation.

I'm a writer. People who are writers are often readers. You don't provide enough reading lamps for someone who loves books. Each seating area should have its own book reading light.

Also, looks like everyone is waiting for the show to start. Why are the chairs not set up conversationally? Although you want books to dominate, it seems the tv wall dominates.

Lastly, as a writer, I cannot stand books used as rainbow decor. I also like to keep my book collection more private. I hate it when my personal library becomes a conversation piece. I cannot imagine that other professions would display the tools of the trade so prominently in a living room for everyone to comment on. We writers can be a picky, reclusive crowd. Hopefully your clients love the space though. Nice neutral colors and pretty sofa.

I don't like the color off the books, it doesn't mach with the atmosphere and it feels like don't belong there . For the rest it's very good and cozy

The color organized books is the BEST is grabbed my eye right away! I'm sure the clients told you what they wanted furniture wise I just find it weird that a writing wouldn't want a deck to write on. It's a seriously awesome room though!

What's the big deal about the books? Arranging by color might actually help some people find things, and by the time the homeowner gets sick of the look and decides to reorganize, it'll be time to give the books a good dusting anyway.

The people who complain about this look often seem offended, as though the books need to be treated with seriousness and respect and you're denting their dignity by organizing them so whimsically. I'd understand that attitude if I were a librarian, but I'm a plain old reader with bookshelves full of items that aren't necessarily pretty any more and somehow manage to disorganize themselves. And I ALWAYS search for my books by color, so maybe...

I love it! It is beautiful in my opinion. It is quite trendy to arrange books in color blocks at the moment that I think look wonderful here and in this room almost looks like art instead of looking perhaps a bit messy in this quiet room if they were all mixed together. It is something very easy to change if styles ever changed. :). Love the blue chair.
