Clean slate...what type of furniture, what colors and how to decorate?

We have been renovating this 1950s ranch home for the last 6 years and I am finally gung ho to put some life and personality into the space. I have been trying to do this for the last several years but just cannot find a color scheme and/or décor to give the space the right feel and “functional” “small” living space. I am a minimalist when it comes to off-wall décor but right now I also have a 26-month old and an 8-month old so extra floor/table décor in the space is more no-no than ever before. We do live across the street from a large inland lake in MI so I have always been interested in a lakeside feel without going totally “beach theme”. I tend to have a very eclectic taste but don’t want to overwhelm the space either and always have a difficult time coordinating colors & decor tastefully. The walls are a slightly pastel/neutral green, and we have hardwood oak floors and dark brown furniture. I am looking at the photo and just hate the "frumpy & sloppy" look of the furniture we do have. Any budget-friendly suggestions for furniture pieces/colors and layout and decor ideas?

My first suggestion would be to remove the verticals and replace with woven shades. My next move would be to replace the lighting fixtures. A large area rug. Take out the rail thing on the entrance wall. Add a canvas sofa in blue denim or linen color with some accent pillow in yellows. Two club chairs and an accent table for conversation.

Create a hallway with a runner from the front door. This will define the entrance from the living area. Also try finding an ottoman that can also be used for seating as well as storage of toys or whatnot. If possible, add a couple of lamps which create a cozier atmosphere than ceiling fixtures.

Remove the white chest in the dining room. It's too crowded with your sideboard. Put a rug down here that covers the entire area. Since you're in Michigan you might want to invest in thermal lined curtains for both windows to go along with woven shades.

If nothing else, rugs and curtains will warm your space up quicky.

START OVER. Nothing in this world could correct this sofa, Give a terrific garage sale and buy yourself a new sofa with a theme in mind. And then follow thru with the look you truly want and deserve, I;ve made that terrible mistake in the past and I now regret every minute of it. But it all started for me when I was a stay at home mom. I just needed function. We always have a right to change our minds.
