Wow! I can't imagine changing this new of a kitchen, either! It's so gorgeous now. Also, I have had a problem with one level islands when they hold a stovetop or sink. I wouldn't want to eat or serve a meal on the same surface where there could be water or food splash. But, since you've lived with this a while, you may feel that you need more work space on your island. I think your kitchen is lovely now and know many of us would give our eye teeth for it, but I also love white kitchens, so understand that desire, too. Whichever way you go, ENJOY!

Just be aware that a painted finish on these cabinets is not going to be as long lasting or low maintenance as the current wood finish you have, or as durable as good-quality new cabinetry with a professional painted finish. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it (though I admit I probably wouldn't), and I'm not saying painted wood cabinets are hard to maintain. I'm just saying they aren't quite as durable as what you have. But durability probably isn't your main concern if you are already changing your kitchen after only eight years.

I aagree with all of the above. However, if you want a change you could always try mix and match cabinetry that is on trend today. Maybe white or ivory top cabinets and leave bottom cabinets as the are? Another simple change to your already great kitchen would be to change out the hardware to something bold and dramatic instead of an entire re-do.

I think it could be a fun project. You could certainly have a pro take the door fronts and spray them professionally at their site and then have them finish of the boxes. You could also just change the flooring and leave the rest for now but I would think that if you are expecting then there will be little time once the baby arrives.

Some great comments above. If you want to "freshen" things up, I would start with your lighting. Both the island lighting and overhead sink lighting seem bulky; consider updating...perhaps glass lantern style and pendant over sink. How about a back splash and fabric roman shade over sink. Two easy ways to finish and update what you have. I would do all of these things before painting the beautiful wood cabinets. If you want painted cabinetry, I would limit to island base only in a taupe/khaki tone to complement stain.

If I've read the timeline correctly, the "baby" should now be seven or eight years old, as hcortesi was pregnant during the original renovation. Yes?

Thanks for the comments...outside of my husband shaking his head wanting to kill me with every redo I just redone...my tastes change with the seasons. I should have stated in my heading "looking to hear opinions of people's experience on painting/glazing cabinets" since I'm afraid to do it. My cooktop would be eliminated off the island and and pro series range would go where the fridge is. Fridge would then go back to where it originally was which is currently the double oven. Hmmm...now typing this....I scared myself more!

You have a beautiful kitchen, please do not paint the cabinets! I suggest you look into changing the countertops. Although they are beautiful, as is your island/bar, the black may be the problem. Start with looking at lighter counter tops and maybe tile backsplash between the counters and top cabinets and new bar stools to match. Start with something small and work around it, uld be a shame to paint the cabinets.

Feeny....yes...pregnant with triplets, so my decisions were made to "get it done" vs "what I actually like". They are now 8. Just the right age to make pretty white cabinets dirty!

Hmmm..... always tradeoffs with moving appliance locations. I get the frustration with cooktop at island...but personally I would never give up double ovens for a range. Also, I have lived in a home with fridge in similar location as you are considering (where your double ovens are)... hated it! You want to keep the triangle you have now with walking pattern between fridge, sink and cooktop. You need your double ovens for baking cookies with your little ones! :)

Triplets! hcortosi, I am impressed you have any energy left to even imagine renovations!

I am speaking entirely practically now, hcortosi, but I really would recommend living with this lovely kitchen for a few more years as it is. Then if you still want white cabinets when the triplets hit their teens, do some renovations at that point. I've had white painted kitchens for almost my entire adult life and love them, but the paint does need periodic touch ups from dings and chips. What you have now is going to stand up to triplets better.

If you are on the fence about this, do you have photos of kitchens you are inspired by? Maybe people can offer some suggestions as to how to achieve a lighter look with what you have. I know my tastes have changed or at least become more defined within the last few years so I understand wanting to change your kitchen after 8 years.
If you give some more information about what kind of look you are going for - less traditional? more modern? - I think it would help. A couple of things I am thinking would be to change out the light fixtures, repaint the island so it's not distressed in a green or blue with some grey in it, and paint the walls a cooler tone with some grey/blue/green like the island. Adding a lighter backsplash could also help.

Your kitchen is beautiful. I would not change to white especially with triplets. I would also leave the fridge where it is. The triplets will go into the fridge l00 times a days when they are teenagers and when they start to cook for themselves, you will be happy your island is two tier. I wish I did a two tier island and my cooktop is in the island and I like it. Your location is good plus if you move the oven to refrig space, will you have enough room to open the oven doors without backing up into the island? I agree with the lighting, I would start with that to lighten things up a bit.

You could update this look using paint with an overglaze rubbed into the corners. I think the project could be very successful, using the right products.

Thank you all! Everyone gave me great solid advice that made me think small changes first instead of jumping in feet first! Maybe that's the problem since I'm always redoing everything I just did a couple years earlier. I laugh because a double oven for me is a space filler since I stink at cooking. I did worry about moving the fridge there because it would be in a busy traffic pattern which I will hate down the road. I think I'm heading down the new island color, countertops, fixtures, backsplash and wall paint path first and will live with it for awhile. I'm sure I'll be happy with even the smallest change.
