Top loading HE washer

I got a top loading HE washer with my recent house purchase. Seems to me, the main advantage of an HE washer is it uses less water. That's a big deal when you have high water bills.

But this house has a well, the water is free. All I have to pay for is the electricity to pump it. Am I missing something here?

At first I went to the grocery store and bought laundry soap with the HE logo on it. Then in moving, I discovered at least 3 partial big bottles of laundry soap, all have the HE logo on them. If all I use is a tablespoon per load, I have more than enough to last the rest of my life.

A Tablespoon? You must have ultra soft well water and very lightly soiled clothing.

Do you also have a septic tank? That's another reason to use HE. You will most likely need more than one TBS of detergent in a medium to large sized load to get your clothes clean. That largely depends on water hardness. If the house has a functioning water softener, you will cut detergent use, but not likely to a TBS, except for the smallest of loads.

Well water is not quite exactly free. The electricity to pump it is a factor, even if it's relatively minimal. Wear/tear on the pump. Also heating of the water (do not wash everything in cold water, your washer will become a smutzy mess).
