You have plenty wall space for big art...leave the FP as is.

I agree with Beverly. A nice piece of metal art work would look great on your fireplace. Make sure it is a large piece to match the scale of fireplace. A collage of pictures above your piano would also add personality to your room.

Since the fireplace is the focal point, consider orienting the sofa to face the fireplace. It will still be fine for tv watching.

Your walls overtake the house. All one sees are those giant walls that dwarf all furniture and living beings. So you've got to do something with them.

One solution is to jam-pack them with art like black-and-white posters in different sizes and different frames on one wall. A few big mirrors on another wall. Or some big art as Beverley suggests.

I might even create an extra trim on the same height of the top of the railing and paint the wall and ceiling above it a whole lot darker. In order to create the illusion of the ceiling being less far away.

By the way: I like that big clock.

The entrance to the kitchen seems unfinished. It needs some impressive trimming.

Another idea is to make an extra piece of flooring above the entrance to the kitchen and above the piano at the same height the floor with the railing there starts. Just go around the curves there and let the railing follow. Three feet in width would do. Then I'd make a library up there. Some beautiful, but slender bookcases filled with books and art. One can get there from the upper floor.

To leave it as it is, is no option to me.

Thank you all so much for the wonderful ideas. I'm very pleased to hear that I don't need to leave my walls bare. So if furniture is the lower 1/3, should artwork fill the middle 1/3, or should it fill that & extend higher? Yes, I am planning to add door trim between the rooms, I just haven't gotten that far yet. Thanks for mentioning it. It reminds me that it's something I really need to get done. That bland fireplace overwhelms the whole room. Put a mantel in to co-ordinate with the crown moulding, then plaster or drywall to the ceiling.

I love the fireplace and wouldn't add a thing.
