If you had a window in the kitchen I would be more inclined to say yes, move the sink under the window.

Since you don't have a window, I'd leave the sink where it is. It's a more functional setup versus having everything lined up against the back wall. Besides, you'd be facing out into your great room while doing dishes, versus facing a wall.

If concerned about messes, I would hide it with a raised dining bar section on the back of the island.

Hi Mrs. S., Consider eliminating the pantry and replacing it with lower & upper cabinets. Move the sink & dishwasher down in the direction of the old pantry and mover the range or cook-top to the center of the island so you can talk with your children and or guests while preparing fabulous meals. Build out the closet under the stairs to line up with the end of the island and locate the pantry there. Center the laundry door between new pantry and the new counter top and use a swing in door for the laundry in order to reduce any noise. I think you're then done! I like it. The guest room has privacy. I like the den so the adults don't always have to be with the kids. I don't have a problem with the sink in the island, but if you don't like the look of the dish drainer all the time, maybe consider a two tiered island to separate the kitchen from the living room and bar seating.

If you put the sink on the wall, I think you'd feel isolated with your face to the wall all the time.

I have a sink and stove that face the wall and I find I do my prep on the island that faces the living room.

Are you on a really small city lot that makes you have a front load garage?
