Paint the surround and mantel but remove the wood above the mantel

I find the wood grain pretty so if you like wood you could stain it a darker less yellow color. Leave bricks natural.

I like this type of firescreen but your choice depends on whether

you have children.

I like the idea of painting the brick white and painting the shelves a darker color, even black (or staining them a darker color) will really create a strong focal point for the room.
