I think that some of the crabs and hawthorns are native, but you will want to research ones that are disease resistant

several native Viburnums, but most need a second of a different cultivar or wild type since not self-compatible

Native plums and cherries such as Prunus maritima/beach plum or Prunus Americana.

Also, based on my experience with heavy equipment, especially on wet soils like now after all this summer's rain, you will most likely want to take something like a spading fork and wander around the yard plunging it in deeply and wiggling it just to loosen up the compaction some.

Serviceberry, American Persimmon, PawPaw, Winter King Hawthorne or Washington Hawthorne.

A garden I work in has a Hawthorne tree. Killer with 2 inch thorns that stick out right from the trunk. Thanks for the rest but not this one.

There are lots of thornless cultivars of Hawthorne available. Winter King, for instance. I think Downy Hawthorn is naturally less thorny as well. The birds don't actually *LIKE* the berries, but get around to eating them in the Winter when they are desperate.

In Zone 5 you could probably plant American Mountain Ash or Showy Mountain Ash. Short lived but but gorgeous.

There are so many choices. Any other preferences or constraints? How big were you thinking? What threats would these plants face?
