Security dictates solid door. The mirror is nice ..you might add a mirror chest to reflect what light there is . and do a gold leaf or a silver leaf frame on the wall mirror? You can add a more impressive ceiling light but if it's off??? Or you could get a painting to place over a mirror chest, and place a mounted art light over it, and let it on when you have guests coming or when you want more light in the area, eliminating the lamps. The mirror chest would reflect light as it shines on the artwork of course and it should be a nice light daytime landscape or still life, not a dreary painting of course. There are lots in all price ranges to choose from. Congrats on the new home!

Yep - most folks will turn the lights on when taking the picture. A new door and a chandelier are in order.

If this area gets no light, and a door with glass is not an option, I'd install some LED wall sconces and keep them on all the time. Like in some hotel hallways. The LED's would draw very little power. HTH.

A glass door would do wonders. I would not recommend a chandelier due to the low ceilings; however, replacing the light with recessed lights and adding a few extra would do wonders for your space.

I have used soothing green tea and spanish olive from Glidden Paint in dark spaces and it helped to brighten up the space. A very large mirror with gold, silver or jewel tone color on the frame would help a lot! A nice shimmering glass chandelier if you are going traditional, or a more subtle brass modern light fixture if you are going more contemporary. Dark charcoal would go well for contrasting color if you go with green and contemporary look. A deep royal blue to contrast with green if you go with a more traditional look. Console table not dark wood, maybe glass, lucite, rattan, something lighter. Good luck!
