Can you show a full branch and the whole plant as well?

Definitely a Euonymus but do need to see more of the plant to nail down the species.

The fruit are definitely spindle but white pendulous flowers? That doesn't ring true for any Euonymus I know of. Maybe you saw flowers from a different tree.

This is the tree/shrub now. It's about 6 feet tall. It's much fuller in spring and summer as it has lost quite a few leaves already. It also suckers a bit, if that helps. And also a close-up of the leaves and seedpods now. It definitely has small white flowers hanging down in spring, but not showy.

Looks generally like Euonymus europaeus. Which, after the much more prevalent winged euonymus is also the one most likely to be encountered here. Flowers of these are small green stars.

I have lived in Muskegon Michigon all my life. And I just saw the first bush two days ago. I am going to watch this bush and take pictures in all four seasons. I will find out if it is worth growing in my yard.

Seriously doubt the OP's shrub is E. europaeus. Europaeus is not native here, rarely sold in any nurseries and very uncommon. It is far more likely to be E. occidentalis or the western wahoo.

Roxsanne, we would need to see photos of yours to confirm it is NOT winged euonymus (E. alatus), which is very widely planted and can self-seed freely, to the point of being an invasive species in many locations.

There is a possibility it could be an eastern wahoo, E. americanus, but again, need to see photos to confirm.

Euonymus europaeus has naturalized in some areas here in Michigan. I see volunteers along the edges of wooded areas fairly frequently in my local area. The species seems to be a favorite of Euonymus webworm.

Here's one of the volunteer Euonymus (I'm assuming it's europaeus) growing along the road at the edge of a wooded lot. They generally hold their leaves late - this one is still fully green as of today 12/3/21, but many of the others have dropped most or all of their leaves at this point.

Interesting. That doesn’t look like the spindles in my local hedgerows. The native europaeus in my neck of the woods start to colour up well before the fruit split and by the time the pink turns to tan the long leaves are long gone. The autumn colour is an unusually bright pinky red. Not many of our natives are very showy. Do you think the species is developing different traits in N America?

I'm not certain on the species, it's possible they could be bungeanus or hamiltonianus - not sure how to distinguish these from europeaus. Some of the plants I observe do turn a light pink/red color, typically late (in November).
