Or at least paint it the same new color as your walls. You could paint that vanity any shade you love since you hate it the way it is, and then save up the money for a new one.

I would replace the floor first. Then paint your vanity and wall cabinets white. Put a white frame around your mirror. If there is any money left you could replace the faucet. Paint or paper the walls as funds become available?

You can do about a third of those things on your budget, if you shop carefully. Maybe start with some grout paint that's close in color to the current tile, and a light paint color. Then you might be able to replace the vanity and remove the cabinet over the toilet, replacing it with a picture instead (unless somebody will need this bathroom full time and thus a lot of storage). Lessee...

I dunno. Your faucet is ok, so maybe put most of your money into the vanity and a frame for the mirror and then call it a day. Room looks ok already.

There's not much square footage so find a cool tile at Floor and Decor or Home Depot or Lowes like white hex or white penny tile...something fun. It's like $3-4 a sheet.

I would leave the floor and replace the vanity and cabinet. If you catch a good sale, you can do just manage that. You don't have the money for the floor too. If you're really really careful, you might get new accessories out of it or paint. If you even want those things.

My kids have had some success haunting Habitat for Humanity restore. They've found tile, cabinets, fixtures, etc. to update bathrooms on a very small budget. Ikea is also a good place to look for low-cost, contemporary bath stuff. And, of course, Craigslist. Good luck with your project.

I would use einportlandor's advice and look for a modern, narrow vanity that does not stick out so far into the room. These often come in a set with a mirror. Check Home Depot and Lowes sites and watch on Craigslist and eBay for them Some sets even come with a matching cabinet for above your toilet, though it will be smaller than yours. I pulled this one off my Craigslist in about two minutes, and did not even finish looking at the vanities available. They want $200 for the vanity, sink, and mirror set. If you are rural, check out your nearest big city's site.

So watch for deals on the other items, too, and accumulate them as they come available. One tip: don't buy a faucet before the vanity top, since you don't know how many holes you will have to work with.

Those mentioning cheap tile must be assuming that you can jackhammer and level thinset yourself, because the main cost in tile flooring is labor.

Acm, if it's a basement I'm assuming it's on a concrete slab and I doubt she would need a jackhammer. You can try chipping it up...

The hex tile at floor and decor is $2.99 a sheet and pretty easy to lay. Grout is pretty cheap. A small tile saw is $49.

I bought a $1200 36" Restoration Hardware vanity on Craigslist for $400. I could have found one cheaper but really wanted the RH one.

I found the faucets I wanted at a store but got them on eBay for $75.

I can stretch $800 a long way.

And I would not put a cabinet over the toilet.

Yes, ikea has great vanities and tops and sometimes they are off...

Some hang on the wall and are tricker to install. I had one in a white gloss and loved it. It's such a sleek look and makes the room feel larger because it doesn't go to the floor.

The Hemnes have front legs they can rest on. I don't like the knobs, but easy to change.

Jackhammer tile? I don't think so! They make bars for taking out flooring. That part isn't hard.

i wouldnt spend 800 on all those tasks, even if it were possible (which it probably wont be, especially considering labor)

personally, I would want everything to function and work, not cheap material /shoddy work that would break down

if youre going to put work into your house, do it the right way.

btw, having to drywall installation holes and paint and installing the toilet/vanity alone would run you close to 700.

It can be done. Good advice above. I'm a girl with no experience, and I did my bathroom tile myself after educating myself (my brand new house came with carpet in the bathrooms!) The only other things I changed were mirror, faucets and painting vanity/walls.

Not everyone can afford full bathroom renovations...

That is a tough budget but enough to get started. Make a plan and you may not get to everything, you may have to leave some things for down the road. Your cabinet over the toilet can be removed and not replaced, it is a basement and you have under sink storage, you don't need it. Your toilet looks fine as does your faucet. Put your money into new tile and paint and if you have enough for an inexpensive vanity that too. The shower will probably have to wait until round two (just make sure you buy extra tile in case you need it down the road for any changes.

I would start by finding out how much it would cost to move plumbing so you can move the vanity over to the wall and add a smaller vanity so you can bring the bathroom up to code. You're supposed to have 21" in front of the toilet and it looks as though there's barely 12" as it is now. There is also supposed to be 15" from the center of the toilet to any solid object (in this case it's the wall and the shower). The tile can be freshened up by lightening the grout with a grout pen as suggested. Craigslist is a good place to start for a new vanity and a smaller solid surface top and new faucet can be had for about $200. Some pretty floating shelves and baskets over the toilet will let you have storage but open up the space. Use a scrubbable flat paint to help hide imperfections in the walls. It's a small bathroom and you can have fun with any color you like. You should be able to pick up a pretty light fixture for less than $100. Eliminate the idea of replacing the floor and you should be able to accomplish a nice makeover for your $800 budget.

I could totally do this on a $800 budget. It's just a basement bathroom. It doesn't have to be the Taj Mahal.

I was going to recommend getting rid of the vanity altogether and going with a pedestal sink for space reasons. You should be able to find a decent one at a big box for $100. Or visit a habitat restore, because they typically have them there. Also check there for lighting, faucets and flooring depending on size. I've purchased lighting there for less than $10 also.

Get to know the clearance aisles at your big box stores. I've picked up some great deals there, and you can sometimes negotiate on clearance prices.

For flooring, what is the flooring outside your bathroom?

If you wanted to learn to ceramic tile, this would be a great room to learn on. If you don't want to ceramic tile, you could use lvt. You just need a blade and straight edge to install.
This should leave you plenty of money left for wallpaper.

You can't move plumbing on that budget.

I have 4 baths in a condo I am redoing right now, all on a budget and I'm sourcing Craigslist, ebay and Floor and Decor for tile, RH outlet for my lighting, etc....you just have to look....

You can get a lot for $800. But you have to be able to do it yourself.

Definitely agree with Banjo up towards the top of the thread, whatever is bothering you most should be the first thing to change. To me, that would be the cabinet over the toilet..

Even though the bathroom is small, there is a lot of potential of making this room great! I would save yourself some space and not have anything (large) above the toilet. Maybe a smaller mirror and light fixture could add space. The obvious would be is getting a smaller shower. Is that possible?

Paint the walls, get the grout refinished (they sell some sort of paint for that), paint the vanity and call it a day until you can start over. One other thing, update the lighting to LED so that its bright.
