Think hard before you do that feature bit behind the stove. IMO, it's already dated. A kitchen has enough going on that you don't need to add any nonfunctional ornamentation.

I love your choices in the original post photos, Its not busy at all. The pattern in the granite is very linear which will create a less "busy" look while the backsplash coordinates color-wise very well and will give you the busy-ness that you are looking for

Amanda,,,no accent line. and doing the accent behind stove with too many different items, may not work. don't forget, you have two diff cab colors and your flooring.

if you want busy, do the full wall w/the herringbone or your ovals.

can you get a slab of the Athens Gray? what if you did that for your counters?

Is it Athens gray granite or quartz?

it's actually a type of limestone,,some refer to it as marble. it's the same stuff in your mosaic and your floor tile you picked. prob not the best product for a countertop. you would have to baby it like a carrara. If you're a super messy cook, or someone who used the kitchen a lot, then it will require you using lots of trivets and being careful. It can be polished, honed, or leathered.

I just figured since you really want those mosaics and can't find something to work with them, this is a good compromise.

After reading comments & mulling it over I think this granite & backsplash are fine together even if busy! The other concern that I have though is that these photos were taken outside and I don't know how they will look indoors once house is built. The countertop place has no samples of this granite either. Will they look darker indoors than they look outdoor? Since the cabinets are a dark gray stain will this combo look too gray & gloomy once indoors? I thought the granite & backsplash would have more white in it... my goal was to have dark cabinets with light countertops, flooring & a backsplash that pulls the light & the dark together...

not only is the backsplash busy, but there are so many nicer ones out there. Your backsplash is the "bin there done that" kind of backsplash.

I would consider a white backsplash. You can go with subway ceramic tile, marble waterjet tile with a beautiful geometric or floral pattern, cement tiles are limitless in design and color too. Your cabinet choice along with the countertop choice is so nice. I wouldn't ruin it with something genetic and too busy that competes with the grain pattern of your countertop. You need something that complements it.

Ok so drum roll...lol We FINALLY INSTALLED our cabinets and granite after several months of delays. I love them so far and need help with a backsplash that will blend everything together. :) see pics. Today I looked at two backsplashes. Both herringbone. One a polished white marble herringbone and the other a polished Carreras gold marble herringbone . Attached are photos of the kitchen and fireplace. The bar wall of the kitchen we want to do in reclaimed wood if it will go well. So I have attached a photo of the reclaimed wood from the place locally that will sell the reclaimed wood for our bar wall. We also plan to have some reclaimed wood shelving and decor throughout the house which will blend everything since we have a lot of different wood colors going on. Appliances will all be stainless steel including flute range hood. Please let me know what you think I'd love to hear from you. Thanks so much!

calacatta is too busy to work w/your granite. the carrara is ok,,,,a white thassos marble would be better.

Thanks Beth, I like the white thasos, very contemporary. I will look into it. White or light gray grout? Below are also some inspiration photos of the color schemes and decor I would like to go with. The last photo is the color of the wood floors going with that will start where tile ends.

have you thought about doing a herringbone in a larger format? maybe, 2x8? you could use regular ceramic tiles if you prefer. white or even the gray.

I really like the larger format in white with gray grout! Going to see where I can find that tile & if my tile guy can do herringbone

panda,,,those 2x8's (I like that size for a kitchen) are all over. make sure you bring home samples of whites!! they are not all the some. some are grayish, some are creamy, some are bight white. tilebar has some (and larger too,,) try the Cadenza line for a little texture.

do you want more modern sleek look, or maybe more of handmade look to the tile?

I am thinking I want a smooth polished look, just not sure which tile. I like the 2x6 or 2x8 larger size in either herringbone or chevron pattern...found these.

I just installed the same backsplash a couple months ago and it came out great. It looks way busier in the picture for some reason than real life and everyone who comes over comments they love the backsplash and I'm not even asking them. Everyone.

Beth! Thank you for making my creative juices flow again yesterday with your ideas! After you posted your suggestions I went back to the store & returned those other two backsplashes & found some that I like MUCH better. I love these three, all would be with gray grout except the one with gray already in it. I love them so much that I cannot decide between them!

I also thought about doing the top photo of gray & white backsplash behind the cooktop all the way up to flute area and these (bottom photo) white backsplash everywhere else.

wow. I like all of those! No mixing though. because your granite has movement and the tile is mosaic, just stick with one all the way across.

sidenote,,,i'm a little disappointed on how they fabricated your granite,,,,the one w/the seam and to the left of that where the veining flows in the opposite direction of the rest of the counter.

They actually aren't done fabricating the granite. The seam is where the cooktop will go. They didn't cut it out yet, nor did they do the sink. So hopefully once done it will all work well. I did wonder about the granite to the right of where oven will go though...is the veining supposed to flow in that direction? Yes that is where the reclaimed wood will go. Wow, I wish I had an app that would spice photos like you do. That is great! The only thing I have noticed though is that I think the reclaimed wood will look a little less bright once inside the house. Everything else has looked less bright once inside the house thus far...also the reclaimed wood is a mix and no two are alike so it won't look exactly like the wood in that picture.

I'm wondering how it would look next to your wood floor? you know, you could also take left over wood from the floor and bring it up on the bar area,,,,cut into a chevron or herringbone pattern.

Here it is nectgto my wood. My wood looks much grayer when inside the house for some reason. Both of these pics are of my flooring. Flooring gets delivered tomorrow & installed next week I believe. I am hoping once it is installed then it will be easier to envision the reclaimed wood bar wall, but won't have much time to make a decision since my builder wants to getf the reclaimed wood material this week...

Would use a Medium gray grout for both of these backsplashes.

that's why i mention you could bring your actual flooring onto that bar wall. just have them cut it on a 45 and make the pattern out of it. That way you're not getting two totally different looking woods against each other

I really want something like this. This flooring is similar to mine and I want the wood on my bar wall to look like the wood in this photo....

not sure if it will work out though and I am nervous about putting the warm toned wood on my wall even though I do have other warm colored wood going into my house...I have two 48 " long wooden shelves going above fireplace and a natural wood wine rack going on the kitchen wall next to light switch....which is why I want warm wood in the mix on the bar wall...but it all needs to be cohesive. Does that seem like it would be cohesive?

not sure about the other. maybe bring home a few samples to see how it looks in the house? or, go to a lumber yard where they have more reclaimed wood to choose from.

The place that sells the reclaimed wood gives us a pallet of it and cannot guarantee any particular colors. So I was thinking once they deliver the wood if there isn't enough gray in the wood then I am willing to stain a few pieces of it in light and dark grays. if thats not too difficult.

These are some of my home decor ....I have grays mixed in with the warm woods in all of my decor. So I am trying to make the house cohesive with that....

This is the family room which is open to the kitchen. The fireplace masonry also has some warmth...the beam & mantle are not yet painted/stained. So I think it would be one dimensional to focus solely on the cool tones of the kitchen. Trying to envision everything put together.

I'm just afraid it's too rustic looking with your kitchen. the kitchen is leaning a little contemporary and that wood is really rustic. I just don't know.. that one small patch of bar space w/that wood, IMO, may seem a little off. I could be wrong though. You're in the house and can see how everything looks.

very difficult to get that wood to stain gray. you would have to use a gray paint mixed w/water. the gray stain will just get absorbed and won't show against the browns, at least not on the darker pieces. maybe on the raw ones they might. you'd have to use a gel stain (not Minwax!) a wash w/paint would show up better

Ok, I am going to call the place tomorrow to see if they can give me some samples. That way I can view in my house and experiment with staining them if needed. Thanks for the tips on staining! It is important that rustic goes well in the house because all over contemporary will not be cohesive with all of our decor and overall vibe. We want a contemporary farmhouse look which blends contemporary with rustic. I do have concerns with the wood colors they can provide so need to look into it further to make sure it is cohesive with my flooring and kitchen.

perhaps if you got a wood a little smoother? I know you like that rustic wood,,,maybe use that in another room? you could do the bar area in another wood,,,,like that one in pic behind your wood. see how smooth it is? not that color, but something along those lines.

After talking about the reclaimed wood more we are going to use a different tongue and groove wood for the reclaimed wood bar that is a cleaner more contemporary look. They said it is stainable any color so we will stain a lot of grays with some natural and darks in there...

I have until This Thursday to decide on backsplash. This backsplash gives me the flutters from the first time I looked at it and now. Originally it was outside of my budget but I am rethinking it... :)

Beautiful granite but the backsplash is too busy in my opinion.

My new kitchen is done! I absolutely love every part of it and have no regrets. This was a year long process and I want to thank everyone who helped steer me in the right direction as my mind was going in several directions deciding. Especially you Beth for helping get my creative juices going and bringing up key points! It all worked out exactly the way I envisioned in the end and now I'm ready to enjoy it! :) :)
