Need to replace glass top on Electric Kenmore Elite range

Hello Gardenwebbers/Houzz folks,

I have a Kenmore Elite Range (Model #790.46123300) It is fifteen years old but it is perfectly fine and in good working order. The range top is part number 318154711. Sears parts says they no longer manufacture this range top. Can anyone tell me how to get a new one? I realize I will probably end up having to buy an entire new range, but this really 'burns my toast' if you catch my drift. They've stopped manufacturing this item!!!! No wonder our landfills are getting packed with junque that is perfectly fine but needing a repair.

Any replies and all advice appreciated. Even rants! :-)

All I have is a rant; sorry: although as part of the rant I will point out that the cost for my gas glass top replacement would have been in the $500s and I just threw my broken glasstop cooktop away and replaced it with a regular white metal unit.

I'm glad to hear that your unit was essentially working well for so long. I hated mine. It was a horrible mistake. I had assumed it would be easier to clean and that was completely wrong. The glass near the hottest burner got stained early and other areas crudded up over time. My unit had horribly designed screws to hold the burners to the glass that even after replacements of initial screws began to freeze up so removal of burners for cleaning or repair became impossible. I broke the top in an attempt to remove them. This was a KitchenAid glass top and it was a total POS!

Are there any large independent appliance stores in your area that have repair departments? Or independent appliance repair companies? Call and ask them. There may be a generic top that can fit. It's likely that on a dollars and cents level, it would be more effective to buy a new range, but it would be nice to make that kind of decision rather than being forced with no choice.

Yep, called Hunter Appliance a very good independant store and repair service in Metro West Massachusetts. They basically said a repair would not be cost effective and showed hubby a couple of floor models. Talk about planned obsolence! What a giant PITA! A new Kenmore Elite is like $2K. I looked on Ebay and they've got one for sale. Anybody ever bought an electric range on Ebay? Shipping is free. LOL If you have to return it, that may cost an arm and a leg. Wondering about Ebay purchases. Anyone?

The large oven in my 40" Kenmore Elite Electric smooth top range stopped working 2 years ago. It cannot be repaired due to parts not available. It is really irritating for parts to just not be available. It was $2,000 and lasted not quite 10 years. Bummer! I don't have much to chose from for a replacement. Frigidaire now makes a 40" but I cannot make the decision because I concerned that it will have problems. It will cost $3,000, so I want to make a wise choice!

I also need to replace my Whirlpool Gold dishwasher. Been hand washing since July.

    Debbie K.,

What's the model number of your range? All the digits, including three before the period (syntax of xxx.xxxxxxxx). What parts are needed that are NLA?

    Debbie K.,

    790. indicates it's sourced from WCI/Frigidaire.

I searched the model at SearsPartsDirect.com (there are numerous other online sources) and the great majority of parts are indicated to be available. A few items are listed as NLA (such as the oven liners, convection fan blade, clock/timer board, and one of the burner switches).

I know of a couple outfits that repair electronic boards. I searched the clock/timer part number at one of them (FixYourBoard.com) and it's listed as one they handle.

Hey dadoes, I am the O.P. That was awfully nice of you to look up Debbie K's part numbers and to give her other resources. Kudos to you my friend. That's what Garden Web is all about! Would you (or did you) look up my numbers? Just in case the range top is available elsewhere? I still haven't bought a new range as the one we have is still working fine except for the giant hole in the glass top. 790 is the beginning of my model number, so maybe Frigidaire might have it? How would I look it up on Frigidaire's web site? All replies welcome. Thanks so much.

Thanks Dadoes! I've had two repairmen try to find that specific part and they both said NLA. Whatever works the main oven is the problem. All other controls work. One guy tried to see if he could find someone to fix the motherboard and he could not. So, looks like I'm going to have to buy the Frigidaire 40" that's available now. I'm holding out because it doesn't have storage drawer at the bottom, just a dummy drawer!

also, didn't mean to hijack the original posters issue. Just wanted to add my stove problems with the Kenmore Elite.

    DFaustClancy,

I don't find the glass cooktop available. There's a slim chance that a "local" repair/parts service somewhere in the country may have one ... but this is the type of item that a servicer would get only for a specific customer/job, not an item that would be routinely kept as an "in-stock" item in case someone comes up needing it. Also not something that an after-market parts manufacturer would offer.

FixYourBoard.com offers a 2-year warranty on their work. I sent my parents' NLA Whirlpool wall oven board to them for repair in March 2011, it's still working fine today.

The other board repair service is CorecentricSolutions.com

Thanks so much! I will research.

Dfaustclancy, hope you are able to get your cooktop replaced. Between the two of us, maybe we would have a complete stove, lol!
