Almost all smart phones have a hotspot capability. Using one with that turned on, the smartphone produces a Wifi signal that any device can connect to and then use the smartphone's cell connection for internet access. If you already have a smartphone, this would be the cheaper way to go (even with an iPad) because you wouldn't have to pay the cell carrier for a second connected device (as you often do with a cell-signal enabled iPad). Also, then you could use any type of tablet, including Android ones that tend to be cheaper than the Apple products.

I agree with EJF; I have an iPad which I used as a hotspot before I got my internet connection supplied by the cable company. I had set my usage at 4 GB per month, but when my daughter visited, I had to temporarily up it to 10!

The refurbished ones are cheaper, and they come with a new battery and the same Apple warranty as a new one. I've done this twice and never had a problem. They arrive looking brand new.

I don't know what you mean by hotspot service fee. When I used my cellular iPad, it added $10/month, in addition to usage charges (Verizon). But that's not a hotspot fee, it was just the fee to use the iPad as a cellular device.

mtv, many mobile carriers treat a cell-functioning iPad just the same as if it were another phone on your plan. So, two phones = 2 times Z, where Z is the monthly per device charge. If it's 2 phones and an iPad, it's 3 times Z.

Others may charge a fee for any month in which a smartphone has been used as a hotspot (since doing so avoids the fee to enable another device).

I have Verizon service with a multi-user family plan and there's no added charge when using my Android phone as a hotspot. I know because I use it once in awhile. There used to be a charge but that was some years ago. It may vary from one plan to another, from one carrier to another, it's something to check.

If depends on the carrier. I have T-Mobile, and I can use my iPhone as a hotspot anywhere for free. Some carrriers charge a fee and some don’t even enable that option on your phone.
