They look to be affiliated with Home Depot. I recognize plant photos from the HD catalogue I perused one day to see if they had Royal Palms. They don't.

So prices are good..but I didn't go to the checkout for delivery charges.

There are a lot of great nurseries in the East Bay especially. I highly recommend Annie's Annuals & Perennials and Berkeley Horticultural. Prices will be a little higher but the plants are in great shape, and will grow and fill in your yard rapidly over the first couple of years.

They are efficient and have a great variety. Their plants are decent. I send my diy clients to plants express and my contractors often order from the commercial side of them.

Alot of people in this industry use the same photos so I wouldn't necessarily say they are associated with Homedepot because of a photo. Home Depot has enough buying power to not use a plant broker.

Thank you for all the comments, this is helpful. I'd certainly rather look at the plants I am buying as well. But based on the pricing and the large quantities we're looking at, I felt it was worth looking in to. I called our local Home Depot to inquire, and they said they would only order the plants that HD already carries. So that kind of defeats the purpose when part of the appeal of PlantsExpress is their extensive variety. Next step is to call the retail nurseries...

From what I've read those sources are bankrupting independent nurseries. If you care about things like this, shop your local nurseries. I expect you will find a much broader selection and perhaps better quality at your local nursery. In fact, I know it. I looked through all their listings for perennials, trees and grasses and the selection is what I call Home Depot ordinary. Very standard stuff. Very limited plant palette. Good prices, especially on larger containers.

Good to know, it's strange there's so little info out there - I'd be curious to know what you've read. Fortunately we found a way to go wholesale. Given the quantities we're looking at, retail prices just weren't feasible.

I wouldn’t comment but ... actually we buy our speciality plants from the wholesale side of plants express. They have more than is on the website u just have to ask.

Can't speak to other people's experiences, but here's my two cents given there are not many reviews out there for this company.

Please note this is an edited post, as Plants Express reached out to me after my initial post.

I purchased almost a $1000 worth of hedges (about 12-14 in total) from Plants Express. Two died within the first month (likely due to stress of shipping) and I received a refund pretty quickly upon sending them photos. A little over a year later, a number of them did not fare well. It should be noted that the ones that did survive are doing well.

I'd found this thread and came on here to simply express my disappointment and share my experience. While I had originally mentioned the customer service was good and I took no issues with it; what I did not expect was the incredible level of professionalism and superb customer service Plants Express has shown. Not only did Mike the president of the company personally respond (see below), which I personally feel is huge in this day and age. They also took the time to track down my order details and reached out to me personally on behalf of Mike to offer to make things right.

Needless to say, very few companies have shown this level of customer service and professionalism in my lifetime. It's a rare thing, and as such I rescind anything negative I had to say, as these actions speak volumes.

I still take some issue with the website's user experience, but it's something that can be improved and does not reflect the level of excellent service Plants Express provides it's customers. Given Plants Express' commitment to providing superior customer service, I would have no hesitation recommending them.

North Bay...Santa Rosa has the jail industries sales. These are VERY reasonably priced plants grown organically by jail inmates (They're learning a skill!) The sales have Sonoma Co Master gardeners on site

If you go to the sonoma Co jail, or sheriff site, look up jail sales and you can get a list of plants and prices. They usually have sales about once a month spring through fall, but you can also make an appointment (I think between 8-1) for a private sale/tour. Totally worth the trip! My Sister and BIL did their whole backyard for $300 several years ago. Of course the prices have gone up some, but not much! Nancy

The thing about mail order from say, ebay? You can count on getting the smallest and worst of what the seller has.

It's an old lesson that in person plant buying will always BY FAR best..you pick out the best of the lot.

I only order what I positively can't find here in the bay area. Bite the bullet.

Max, assuming you didn't have abundant rain during the warm months.... plants are not drought tolerant until the roots get established. Each variety is different. If you don't water far more frequently, you will again kill the replacements.

As example, my citrus generally takes 2 years for the roots to grow deep enough and get traction.

I was thinking the same thing, Max. Drought tolerant means drought tolerant after established. Getting established takes 2-3 years. I always heard the rule of thumb for watering drought tolerant plants was once a week the first year, every other week the secone year and then once every three or four weeks the third year, with a higher frequency when it’s really hot.

Also, it depends on how you water. We are always advised to water deeply. I’ve always found that hard to judge, but that’s the rule.

Max, I am very sorry you had this experience. Again, this is Mike from Plants Express. We ALWAYS help replace plants when they fail, we offer as much after sale guidance as you need and, yes, we are very reasonable. I must also add, only watering plants freshly transplanted "2X month" is a surefire way to have them die, no question. Freshly planted plants need extra water to get established. I should note that the 4-6 weeks I watered them twice weekly, then went to once a week for three months and then backed down to 2x a month (was also raining more often then), with higher frequency watering here and there during summer months. Hey plant express..how about plants like Royal palms? I read that HD in soucall sells them and other tropicals local HD wont carry.
